Sold a friend a snubby for his wife.... Bad!
I have had three S&W M36 snubbys in .38 special. I sold one of them to a fried of mine late last week for his wife. There have been some criminal actions in his neighborhood lately, and he wanted her to have it for protection.
Now, I have known this man for over 30 years. He and I have hunted together and shot together, and he is even a Texas CHL holder. He is safe and very responsible with firearms.
My mistake was, I ASSUMED like most gun folks, he had taught his wife how to handle firearms and how to shoot, early on in their relationship. I was dead wrong!
Called me earlier today to let me know she was handling the gun, trying to get the feel of it, and pointed it at a picture on the wall, then pulled the trigger.
That's right! BANG! Shot a hole in the wall!
I offered him his money back and offered to bring it to him right away. He wants to try to teach her how to handle the gun.
This worries me.

I learned years ago to never assume because it makes an ASS out of U and ME both. But, for a first timer at combat range, she hit and killed what she was aiming at. She has potential. 0 -
I sent all my kids, and my wife to hunter safety classes, yes, I taught them also, but students seem to learn better from a 3rd party..... 0 -

I've taught everyone in my family from day one, and sent them to other training and shooting classes. I'm a believer that you can never have too much training or education.

at least no-one got hurt, and im sure she will learn from her mistake, and ill bet her husband does take the time to teach her how to safely handle a gun...but you shouldnt feel any guilt because you sold it...you did nothing wrong.. 0 -

Some things are just assumed, he has firearms in the house already, so basic safety should have already been the rule....

I don't even know what to say about that. Never hand a novice a loaded gun. Never pull the trigger on a gun you haven't checked twice. Never sell a gun to anyone who would make the two previous mistakes. 0 -

i'm just wondering what the hell he was doing handing a loaded firearm to someone with no experience with guns. i would think twice about shooting with this guy. 0 -

Not sure why anyone would give a rookie a loaded gun and let them get the feel of it..... snap caps maybe, but not loaded ammo. I say it is both their faults... her for not seeing it was loaded.... and him for not teaching her to see if it is loaded. 0 -
To clear one thing up, he didn't hand her the gun loaded, nor did he even know she had it. He loaded it after he got it home and put it in the night stand. She was making the bed, and got it out while he wasn't in the room. Not knowing what she was doing, with no trianing, and not knowing it was loaded or how to check to see if it was, she pulled the trigger.
I should have told him to be sure she knew gun safety before he allowed her access to the gun,
He should have done that wheather I told him or not,
And, she shouldn't have picked up the gun until she knew what she was doing.
She's in her 50's, and I guess this is the first time she's held a pistol.0 -

Local Gun dealer Handed me a pistol and told me to pull the trigger to see how the trigger pull was. Should have seen his face when I checked to make sure there was no Mag, Racked the Slide and checked to ensure it was safe. Then I tried the trigger. To be honest it sucked. He thought it was the greatest. But then again I am spoiled by my Kimbers. 0 -
Alot depends on her attitude and even how good their relationship is. So many women these days get combative when you try to explain traditional "man things" to them.
I had an EX who responded "I know how to do it" to every comment I made while trying to teach her or point out safety mistakes. She was utterly unreachable.0 -
You are a sweet man for your concerns....but you are NOT responsible for her mistake. He should have taken her OUTSIDE and gone over things with her before leaving it with her. I wonder if she has ever actually shot a gun before?

Danny, I run into this all the time at our range, Guys know how to shoot and know all the safety procedures, they bring their wifes and turn em loose and they know nothing..
It is really not your fault, same thing could have happend had she herself gone and bought a gun at the store or from someone else.. It is her husbands responsibilty to see that she handles the firearms safely in his house..0 -

No, but I gave him a box of Federal Hydra-Shocks with the gun. It was unloaded when he took possession of it and left my house.0
