STUNNING facts I learned at the gunshow!
I went to a gun show in December here in Kansas city. It's been a long time since I went to one.
I was there for two reasons: I wanted to sell a lightly used (less than 100 rounds through it) Taurus PT-145 Pro and pick up a snubby .38 or .357. I accomplished both satisfactorily.
Over the course of the day, many people looked over the pistol I had for sale. From them, I learned some stunning facts that I thought I would share with all of you.
FACT #1:
The .45 ACP cartridge is TOTALLY inaccurate. You will be lucky to hit a man sized target a 25 feet.
This was news to my ears, as I have competed in bowling pin shoots with my 1911 and done ok. My Taurus would hit pretty much anything I aimed at if I did my part. I'm sure this person's opinion came after lots of personal experience... This one came up several times.
FACT #2:
A .45 will break a wrist pretty quick in a small gun like that.
This was told to me first by a man who was carrying around a Mossberg 590 for sale and looked like he actually 'worked for a living.' I didn't mention, of course, that my friend's little wife had tried the pistol with no problems or complaints. She also managed to hit the target, which was actually more than 25 feet away. *GASP!* I heard this a few more times as well.
FACT #3:
Nobody uses 1911s anymore except collectors.
Well, that's good to know. Nice to know that those pictures from Iraq of US Marines wielding 1911s, news stories of the Harrison, Arkansas police adopting the 1911 as their duty arm, and all the pictures of various shooting champions using 1911 variants are totally fake.
Now if I had heard this from young kinds whose exposure to firearms consisted solely in their hours playing CounterStrike, I wouldn't have thought much about it. BUT THESE WERE GROWN MEN TELLING ME THESE THINGS. And I didn't just hear them once, but several times each from different people.
What's the deal here? Are people just getting dumber?

I agree with both you guys, you never quit learning here on the forums or gun shows. Silly me I went out and invested in a pair of Sig 220's, guess I found my next give aways. 0 -
did you know that they had to sleeve the barrel of the titanium Taurus with steel because the titanium is so hard they can't cut the rifling, at least that's what a gunshow vendor once told me
don't forget a 1911 will go off by itself sitting in a drawer[:)]0 -
Welcome to gunshow reality.
Rule #1. Don't believe any of the radio/TV ads that state "Free HONEST apprisals" and "Highest/fair prices paid for yor guns". Gunshow vendors work on the same principle as pawnshops. Buy low/Sell high. 75% of value is about THE BEST you can expect. Doesn't nessesairly make them dishonest. That's just how the business is. If they gave you what it's worth and then sold it for the same, they wouldn't be in business very long.
What makes many if not most of them dishonest is, as you discovered, their willingness to lie to you in order to try to RIP YOU OFF.0 -

I was at the recent gun show, Bannister Mall, Kansas City. A young man was looking over a table of handguns. He picked up a Taurus revolver and asked the female vendor how much. A rather large man told him to forget .38 specials. They wouldn't even go through a jacket. He then added that a .45 acp would not someone back about 10 feet but wouldn't do much damage either. I was still laughing when he walked away. My guess is that these people read or listen to a lot more about guns than actually fire them. I don't know how anyone could be more wrong, the .45 acp, especially the 1911 couldn't be much more popular these days. 0 -

The #1 fact I learned at a show was: My gun is junk and theirs is in
mint condition. It does not matter if my gun is NIB and theirs is in
fair condition. They will never admit that my gun is worth more than theirs.0 -
Fact: If you have a table at a gunshow, You qualify as an "expert" on all facets of firearms. 0 -

What part of "1911" don't these folks understand? If this design was junk how would it still be around and so popular? How come it is the standard by which their new ^&%$$#&* is measured 0 -
I was at a shooting range in Florida over the holidays and was watching a guy shooting a Rossi .357 in the double action mode. He actually shot it very well. I had a number of pistols with me including a Kimber .45. I struck up a conversation with him during a lull in the action and asked if he would like to try my .45. He said he would pass, he was afraid it would kick too much. I stated that .357 had more recoil than mine and he should do fine.
He fired a few magazines through my Kimber and could not believe how little recoil it had. He was wondering how he was going to tell his wife he was now thinking of buying one.

I was at a show once looking for 10mm ammo. The vendor asks "What kind of 10mm ya got"? I said a Smith & Wesson 610 revolver. He said.. A REVOLVER?? They don't make a 10mm revolver.....[:0] 0 -
A cop works part time where my son processes dear. He told my son that they did not make a 9mm rifle. Because I carry a Camp nine in my truck, my son brought the cop down to look at it. He said that what I had was a "automatic carbine". Gun shows do not have a lock on geniuses. Don 0 -

I learned this too from a local gun dealer. I went in with a Ruger P95DC 9mm in excellent condition and was looking to trade for a gun that would be easier to carry once I get my CCW. The man behind the counter said "Well well you have one of those old 9mm's with 10 round magazines-they are worthless to me as I can't possibly sell that gun with those magazines", he would have to sell the new owner 15 rounders. I'll give you $150! I simply smiled, said thank you, and walked out. Now mind you I never expected him to give me $400 for the 9mm but sheesh at least get in the ball park.0 -
I understand it's hard to hit a car sized target at ten feet, and I would be taking a terrible chance of breaking my wrist, but I want me one of them .45 ACPs that make a car explode when you soot it. 0 -

He was a little off. We pay $175, sometimes $200 for such guns. Maybe he has higher overhead or he was overstocked on similar pistols.0 -

I am sorry to learn about the 1911 being so useless as a sidearm. Because I am so nice I will offer to pay shipping for anyone who would like to get rid of their obsolete 1911's[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] 0
