There is no way I would travel to or in Mexico today. When I was younger me and some friends traveled all around Mexico and had a blast but today it is literally a war zone, its probably safer to travel in Iraq.

At least three American mothers and six children from a Mormon community based in northern Mexico have been massacred in an attack blamed on drug cartel gunmen.
The victims, who belonged to the LeBaron family, were ambushed about eight miles apart in the Mexican border state of Sonora on Monday.
At the time of the attack, 17 of the family members were traveling in three cars from La Mora - a breakaway settlement founded decades ago in northern Mexico as part an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
There are reports some of the family members, who were dual U.S.-Mexico citizens, were heading to celebrate a wedding anniversary.
Several family members have since described horrific scenes, including how gunmen opened fire on one child running away and others burning to death inside a car that was torched.
Other young children managed to escape and hide by the roadside while one of the mothers was shot in the chest as she put her hands up to surrender. Relatives fear some of the victims may have been raped.
One family member has described how a boy managed to hide his wounded siblings - some less than a year old - in bushes before he ran back to the nearby town to get help after his mother was gunned down.
The motive for the attack is not yet clear, although it is possible it was an attempted kidnapping. A family member reported receiving a phone call hearing screams before they were executed.
The religious group has had previous run-ins with organized crime cartel in the area, including one member being killed. One family member, however, believes the recent attack was a case of mistaken identity.

I was going to college in Atlanta in 1969, one of my buddies told me about a place in Mexico called Isla Mujeres. And island in the Caribbean. He said, lots of German, English, and American college girls went on vacation there.
That sounded good to me and the next summer, 1970, I drove down there by myself. Nineteen year old kid what a wild ass I was.
Just to be safe, I bought a Walther in .32 and had it under the seat of my van as I drove around Mexico. Crossing in to Mexico, Mexican cops were supposed to search the van but I gave them a $10 bill and I went right through. Easy to bribe Mexican cops.
I had the brains to sell the pistol to a Mexican guy on the island I think US cops would be hard to bribe, might get caught at the border crossing back in to Brownsville from Matamoros.
And I did meet an American college girl down there, 36-26-36, a blonde California girl, ah yes my dear, thanks for the memories.
Yeah I had a great time and I went back down to Mexico 7 more times, drove all over the country. Never tried to do any dope runs just met the Mexican people, camped out on the beaches and had a good time. I learned to speak Spanish and I grew fond of the people of Mexico, they have a great sense of humor.
Never saw, or heard of, in the seventies or the eighties, of any dope cartel shootouts.
I wouldn't go back to Mexico today if you offered me ten thousand dollars cash.0 -
Remember awhile back some local people had had enough, armed themselves and fought back against the cartels in their area. Then to government showed up to "work with them", that's the last I've heard of it. I do not know what became of the situation. With the firearm restrictions in Mexico the good folks are practically helpless against armed cartel groups. 0 -

Having been there several times on cruises I vow I won't ever go back. My son returned this summer from a fly in resort and was limited to that "area" only and staff insisted on it. The Mormons in the northern Mexico farms/compounds have been living like they are besieged for a long time. The situation reminds me of South Africa and the white farmsteads there.
The LDS are well-armed, guard 24/7 and live with defense in mind. Shotguns and hunting rifles aren't all they have, rumor has it they have pretty much everything a modern infantry platoon might have. The LDS aren't pacifists by a long shot.:)0 -

heard on the radio earlier today, the family was mormon or some branch of , and was typically at odd with the drug cartels for not paying bribes for protection, guess they finally paid ultimate price. 0 -

Amen! No way this was mistaken identity. What did the Mormons do to anger dope Cartels. And they got this multi-wife commune there in the Mexican desert, what is Dad doing, in North Dakota.

Throw in a couple of Hellfire equipped drones and I'd think we could make quite a dent in their population in fairly short order.0 -

Read s news report today tat details the mex President plan as being one of ? hugs ? towards the cartel not waging war on them . He says he can defeat them with kindness and eliminating poverty , sounds familiar? Says war is not the answer . Sounds like to me he is now part of the problem 0 -

Read "The Reaper's Line" by Lee Morgan. Among other topics he covers firearms restrictions, kidnappings, politics and vigilantes in the area mentioned. It appears that he is pro 2nd, anti vigilante and very very anti politician.0 -

The ambush took less than 30 seconds as the gunmen fired at least 150 bullets into the white vehicle.
The red car had followed the white car into the parking lot of a shopping center in Culiac?n, the capital of Sinaloa state, Infobae.com reported.
The authorities identified the dead officer as Eduardo 'N,' 32
Mexican security forces had Guzman Lopez outside a house on his knees against a wall before they were forced to back off and let him go as his cartel's gunmen shot up the Culiacan.
Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval last week showed video and presented a timeline of the failed operation to arrest Guzm?n L?pez - an incident that embarrassed the administration of President Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador.
The video shot by soldiers shows Guzm?n exit the house with his hands up.
Soldiers order him to call off the attacks around the city as gunfire is heard in the background.
Guzm?n called his brother Archivaldo Iv?n Guzm?n Salazar on his cellphone and told him to stop the chaos.

Rough situation down there. Law, order, procedures have to be followed or there is no system worthy of an orderly free society. So what needs done in response to this is something that shouldn't be, yet needs to happen. IMO the response should be assassination of the guy they let go during the firefight. An eye for an eye and so forth, sending the message back in spades, if you kill our officers we will not arrest you, we will kill you. Of course in that situation they should have put one in his brain rather than let him go to begin with. But, again, what rules are best used if an orderly society is to exist? Corruption is rampant down there, so, what are the rules? Are there any and if they drift any further is there any coming back short of a dictator and martial law?
We could descend to this here in the USA, but so many people think that can't happen and are willing to be disarmed and "trust the government". What is going on down south is only part of what can happen when the people are disarmed, or have limited arms.0 -

I did. The police were out gunned. Something we have a hard time visualizing here in the USA.
If the police make the point they will kill anyone the cartels think they can rescue would it stop the cartels from trying or would the cartels continue the fight and try to kill all the officers involved making that point? An example of what I tell people, "everything comes down to the point of a gun". That gun can be a handgun to a nuclear weapon but order is only archived when the orderly have to power to make it so. But power corrupts and the circle really never ends.0 -
