The best deer cartridge is 30.06
It's got to be my favorite. Love the punch at distance. Takes 'em down every time. Lots of ways to load it. Can't be beat, IMO.

Lots of plus's for the old ought-6.
Top 2 in my book = ammo is common around the world and wide range of bullet weights sufficent for deer.
The big minus = factory ammo is not loaded to full potential. It must be downloaded to be safe in 100+ year- old guns.
Reloaders with modern rifles can handload for hunting any critter on earth. Very important in Alaska, Canada, Africa, etc.
I don't own an 06 but own several 308's. With modern powders the 308 does everything the factory 06 does and handloads are even better. All with a shorter lighter cartridge.
Just my opinion - I have never had an argument with a deer about it.
Heck, most of my deer hunting (last 10 years) has been with a bow or the 300 Blackout.

The discontinuation of Hornady's Light Magnum and Federal's High Energy was unfortunate.
Not sure why they're no longer available to those of us who don't handload.
Liability issues I suppose.

Remington used to offer 240 grain and 250 grain core lokt or safari solid load for the .30-06...
And let's not forget the 55 grain and 88 grain sabot discarding sub munition accelerator loads
Larger range scope and breadth of load offerings ever.

It is a great cartridge and I have killed over 70 whitetail with it.
But I must say, I got better performance from my muzzle loader. Now this is at close range in the Georgia woods, average distance 40 yards.
With the 30-06 on a lung shot the deer would run, on average, 110 yards.
With the .495 round ball from my Hawken, Bambi ran an average of 50 yards.
Half the foot pounds, and twice the killing power. Davy Crockett wasn't so dumb, after all.0 -

I live in Northern Michigan and used to live in the U.P. My .270 Win and .308 Win as does many other cartridges work just fine in the swamps and brush you speak of.0 -

The venerable 1903 and m1 Garand were chambered in 30-06. Since once upon a time Uncle Sam was big on civilian marksmanship. Millions of free 30-06 ammo was given for free to promote militia or "the people" to be prepared to protect the homeland.

Yes the 30-06 is the best deer cartridge. The 30-06 is the most versatile and available cartridge of all time. The US military loved the 30-06 thru many wars.0 -
