The best deer cartridge is 30.06
It's got to be my favorite. Love the punch at distance. Takes 'em down every time. Lots of ways to load it. Can't be beat, IMO.

Here in Ohio we are limited to straight walled cases. I use the 45-70 loaded with 300 gr JHP's. Our shots are 200 yards and less. My Encore's both have 45-70 barrels and seem to do just fine on deer. I shoot very carefully to sneak it in just behind the leg into the lungs avoiding meat damage. It has never let me down. I would love to hunt with my 30-06 but until Ohio gets real on deer cartridges I will stick to the 45-70 loaded light. 30/06 old school .270 refined and improved 25/06 developed and better than both. Varmit and big game if needed.
Shoots flatter , higher velocity and with ammo improvements has more energy than a 30/06 past 200 yd.. Including the .308 Mr. Weatherby made the .257 which is the real underdog.0 -

Well, almost. I'd have to add a shotgun (at least for birds, but with a slug barrel it is even more versatile).
And, a decent caliber handgun. I'd choose 10mm auto. Something big enough for hunting and woods defense, as well as light enough for defense of 2 legged threats too.
Back to the OP:
I think the ought six is about as venerable and versatile is they get. I do however think there are now better cartridges available now, but there isn't a lot of gain to be had. Not enough to warrant switching.
It is kind of like I am a big fan off 220 Swift but all my friends shoot 22-250. They always say "well it can be loaded up to 220 Swift levels with handloads". Well yes, but the .220 Swift can be loaded even beyond that. The prairie dog doesn't like either of them and that 200 fps only affects ballistics minimally.0 -
I have to agree with Mr. P. Couple years ago realized down to two rounds, 18 deer out of same box. Bought box of 180 Grain instead of 150 PSP and was a big mistake at least for me. Hit above left shoulder took out one back strap nice loin and messed up hind quarter. Rifle pre64 30-06 FW WIN. with Redfield 1 3/4 - 5 with TV lens. 0 -
where I hunt ( shorter shots , in a stand) I prefer a short action.. 0
