This is about as bad as it gets. Hopefully there wasn't a large death toll since they are used to preparing for hurricanes. They have never seen one like this before though.

The storm practically parked on top of the Bahama's today. The eye was within 20 to 25 miles of Freeport all day. 0 -

we were in freeport and the grand bahamas last year on a cruise, there were many parts of the grand bahamas that still looked like the video from 2-3 years ago when a hurricane had went through, many hotels and businesses were just empty concrete shells for the most part of 15-20 miles from the port to a small beach we went to. lot of small homes just put tarps over the holes in roof and continued to live there. thing is they have no where to go, and no money to do it on, I talked to an old lady selling"junk jewelry" and she got by on tourist trade, her grandson was in military and in the US training, he sent money back to help support the rest of family. pretty sad for such a pretty island. 0 -
Its too bad but they have become a tourist trap. My Dad and I went there in the 70's to fish and it was a camping trip. Just a few hotels and they were small. The fishing was great.
Now the giant hotels will rebuild and the people will just squat in squalor until someone from the US comes and gives them money and stuff to rebuild.
Look at Haiti. They are still whining and living in rubble from their earthquake.
Japan has a tidal wave wash over it and they are up and running in a few months.0 -

while we were in freeport we walked around the town for a few hours, you would come upon blocks in different neighborhoods that were chainlink fenced with abandoned buildings, large gov't/business size buildings that had no tresspasing u.s gov't property signs on fence. Yep, all those islands and cities on The Gulf and Atlantic seaboard are in for it this coming century. Overbuild with shoddy cracker box pixie sticks construction. Puerto Rico was last year's disaster but this year, Bahamas's island is done for. You could not sell any land there for anything now. Even 15 feet above sea level would have to be built on 10ft piers.

The Bahama's are not part of the United States in any way, shape or form. They are an independent country.

Looks like the hardest hit were the two most Northern Islands- Grand Bahamas and Abacos (forgive my spelling) those two islands make up about 20 percent (roughly 60,00 people) of the total population of all of the Bahamas (about 320,000 people)0 -

We have assets that were on scene within hours vs. days.
We can provide immediate assistance in sufficient volume to get them to a point where the Brits can take over, stabilize/evacuate the most critically wounded, etc.
I'm OK with it.
The US engaging for a few weeks will save a lot of lives, and is well worth the effort and expense.0 -
