Absolutely. It is just a hammer until there is a round in the chamber.

1911 Condition 1. This was discussed and argued about for thirty years at my old department.

    Always,1911 style carry pieces.

One up the tube, cocked, locked.

Haven't had the "need" to carry, unless I wanted to, for years.
My right thumb still instantly drops down, when ever I grab something... :D

Under normal CCW conditions with a snubnosed small frame revolver - NO (I prefer not to have the hammer rest on a live round)

Under normal CCW conditions with a semiautomatic pistol - maybe...

If it's my MAS1950 or my S&W 469 than YES as I trust both guns - and both feature excellent deckocking mechanisms and hammer block safeties that are 100% effective and reliable.

Round in the chamber hammer down for me under those circumstances.

If it's a back up gun in a pocket of a jacket or front pocket of pants or perhaps stored in a shoulder pack - one strap light backpack / carry pack than NO.

Of course I do. If I didn't the gun wouldn't go off when I pulled the trigger. The most I want between me and getting a shot off is a conveniently located thumb safety like a 1911. No empty chamber, no hammer down (unless DA.)

I currently carry a revolver so, yes there's a round in the chamber.

yes, if you are going to need your gun there are some scenarios where you would have had time to rack the slide, others no time at all. problem is you don't know which one will happen.

I really didn't like the idea of carrying with a round in the chamber due to safety. I was afraid of an AD. until I paid attention to the striker safety and drop safety on the Glock. realized there is no way it's going to go off unless the trigger is pulled. so now I'm good with that.

the striker safety blocks the striker (firing pin) until the trigger is pulled, which pushes it out of the way.

the drop safety is where the striker plate (sear) sits in a notch and cannot be pushed, bumped or knocked down to release the striker, until the trigger is pulled, which moves the striker plate backward and out of the notch.

Naw, I am so fast and bullet proof, I can draw and rack the slide before the gangbanger gets off a shot, which will miss anyway.

This same title thread was WORE OUT in the old format.

Of course almost everyone replied that they DID. Just imagine most of these old farts have had little or NO formal
training on the use of firearms, but they consider themselves masters on this subject. As I remember,
one replied that he even carried a round in his AR. Mercy.

I can picture some 60-70 year old on a cane hobbling down the
aisle in the mall, hand hovering over his glock with an extended mag, one in the chamber. Course he will be
carrying a 45 even though his wrist is too weak to properly point it.

He will also have a bulge in front of his hip. Would bet his wife helped him buckle his belt since his Hi-point is
just too heavy to manage. His boolits would be FMJ since they are oh so deadly.

Anyone who is in such a danger zone that he doesn't have time to rack one, should be more aware of his surroundings. Just don't think
anyone is going to in contact with a shooter one on one. A potential shooter would be too busy observing or shooting
others to notice details of a ccw person.

Also in this State (Ala), a CCW is not required to "open carry". Gives me the shivers. Most I see open carry are young, hey
look at me, wanting attention people.

I call BS on most of the replies who claim proficiency on their carry weapon.

    Just my .02 cents.

Now go ahead and bleep me.

To do otherwise is just Stupid.

I am smart enough to keep the booger finger off the bang switch.

    Yes, I do.

I do because I am an old fart, shambling along in Walmart with my aluminum walker, trying to get the big pack of Depends in my shopping cart.

And while I am losing brain cells by the minute, I am still capable of envisioning that there may come a situation where I do not HAVE two WORKING hands free to hold my J-22 and rack the slide. I may be trying to fight off that Chihuahua service dog that smells my cat on me and has attacked. I may be rolling on the floor, one arm entangled with my walker after Tyrone hit me with the 40 shopping carts he was rolling in. I may have one hand encumbered by trying to hold my pants up, and keep them from sliding off my bony azz.

I may be pushing away the 19 yr old gang banger who (mistakenly) decided the old fart in the Hawai'ian shirt would be easy pickings. And my free hand is bloody because the little SOB thought if he cut me I was going to cry and collapse. Yeah- sucks to be him.

And yes, I will shoot him until slide lock. Go ahead and tell me you will put me in prison for life. For some of us, that is not as much of a deterrent as you might think. Meanwhile, get off my lawn.

Not only are the ones I carry but pretty much all of my guns are locked and loaded along with every magazine I own. What benefit is any gun or magazine that isn't?

    My dad had a saying-

    It was something like:

?If you?re going to be in a gunfight you are not going to choose the circumstances, but that doesn?t mean you can?t control the outcome through preparation.?

I keep one in the pipe. It is simply part of the equation required to win a gunfight someone else starts.

Nice to see that you hold your fellow forum members in such high regard, Hobo.
As for me, yes, I carry with one in the chamber.

In my P-7 sure why not? In my revolver nope, I had one where the hammer block broke (Dan Wesson) and fell out, it shot just fine without a hammer block (transfer bar?), you can say it isn't possible, I know better.

Safety first and Murphy's law, I'm hesitant to really trust any technology.

Having said that a guy came for me from the rear and had it in mind to stick a Buck folder in my kidney. Shoulder rig, Hi-Power, on half-cock. I put three into him with my Hi Power still in the holster, ruined my holster, didn't do him much good either.

Empty chamber IMO is one of the better safeties, not many situations where a half-second is going to count. I guess I judge the threat and act accordingly.

I've seen many accidental/negligent discharges, IMO much more likely than an actual threat.
I watched a guy blow his own knee cap off with a 1911. When I was working on the range negligent discharge was a daily occurrence. I used to eat lunch right across the street from a MP station, about once a week somebodies firearm would go off while they were clearing it. Our regional Security Chief emptied the freon out of his air conditioner the hard way. The list goes on.
This 70+ year old outshot the youngsters at the range recently. :) I may not be quick but I'm accurate.

There are plenty of people who can get of 3-4 rounds in ?half a second? with a pistol and it?s really easy with a rifle.

You might one day spend the rest of your life racking your slide.

    No way!

A round in the chamber is too scary to even contemplate. I even leave the clip out.

A hammer block prevents the hammer from hitting the firing pin until you pull the trigger which lowers the hammer block. If it broke and fell out there is nothing to prevent hammer from hitting the firing pin if you drop it and it falls on the hammer.
A transfer bar works just the opposite, you have to pull the trigger to raise the transfer bar up so the hammer hits it which then hits the firing pin. If the transfer blocks breaks and falls out you can't fire the gun.
