I have a question
What is the big deal about a "Self Driving" Car??
I just don't get it. I know I would never want one or even want to be a passenger in one.
What is the hype?
What are the advantages?
Now if there was some type of Highway that your car "Hooked" into and you could turn your motor off and put it in N, Kind of like a car wash only faster that would be kind of cool.
But a self driving car, I don't get it.
Help me out here...........

My understanding is the grand plan is in the future everyone will live in large apartment houses and just rent rides as we need them. Advantages? If it's at least as good as your average driver (quite possibly true) then it's better than half the drivers presently on the road. 0 -
All I know is having "Driving Miss. Daisy" is way cheaper and gives a drive a jobbie job. Instead of a machine taking their job. 0 -
Safety. It's supposed to take the human error out of driving...
Economics. It's supposed to be able to take the driver out of a professional driving position...
As far as safety goes, I would never trust the machine with my safety
As far as the economics goes. I just don't see how they're going to be able to save a damn money when there's going to be a lot of lawsuits when the machine screws up and kills or maims people0 -

LOL you guys sound like people who will never use an ATM because you like the personal touch of the banker.
First and foremost the self driving cars will quite likely reduce automobile deaths by MUCH more than half. If you ever lost anyone to a automobile accident reducing those odds by half or MORE sounds pretty good.
Fact is and while we all think we are great drivers and everyone else sucks a machine that knows the destination of the vehicles on the road will allow room to properly merge the vehicles and not cut them off or abruptly accelerate/decelerate in reaction.
Be honest, have you ever crossed a set of RR tracks and not looked? What if the MACHINE that blocks the crossing failed you trusted it didn't you? Do you check both ways prior to accelerating from a GREEN light? No you trusted that the machine didn't turn both lanes green?

Could not have said it better. It will allow you time as you travel to read, put on makeup, make out in the back seat, place calls text and have forum discussions. Driver error is a huge killer; take the human factor out and safety will increase. That is why MOST newer passenger aircraft today have auto throttles for take off and auto-land systems to put the bird back on the ground. Guidance is by waypoints and once entered the plane will fly to that spot and go to the next without pilot input. It is much more accurate than hand flying. If you try to hand fly in stiff cross winds at altitude it is ALMOST impossible to maintain a course and altitude with any degree of accuracy. The flight computers do it with extreme precision

You would never need a designated driver. And no need to spend big bucks owning, storing, and maintaining a car that spends most of its time in your garage or a parking lot. But the big thing will be that it will be pushed on us if we want it or not ... "If only one life is saved..."

Mixture of driven and self-driving cars on the road will never work. Expecting sensors to accurately "read" road conditions at a distance, especially here in Minnesota in wintertime, is overly optimistic. Spare me. 0 -

So, now we can all sit on our phones and change channels on the tv, turn the lights on and off, order food and even grocery shop without getting off our fat asses. We don?t even have to get up to answer the door to take delivery. They will bring it right into your house for you!!!
They will also come right to your home and put gas in your car for you. So, I guess self driving cars are coming as no surprise. Look around and notice all the morbidly obese people you see anymore, even all the young kids.
People need to get off their butts and start doing things on their own. Cellphones have been the worst tech gadget to ever be invented, They are great when used sensibly. Trouble is, they are being integrated so much into our lives, it?s sad. Pretty bad when you can sit on your fat butt and use your phone to see what is in your refrigerator.

However, there are people that can't wait to buy one when the technology improves.
The people I am speaking of are senior citizens incapable of driving due to age related problems, veterans with various battle wounds or amputees. People with partial or vision impairments, and the list includes the drunks and druggies..0 -

Ok that makes some sense to me.
Here is an example though. My Dad has severe Dementia, he gets in his authorized self driving car to go see his Dr. He gets to the Dr but then forgets where he is what he is doing and where the car is parked.
Some people need to have an escort but I get where you are coming from.
As far as a Taxi being a "Self Driving Car" I don't think so. They are driven by a Human not a computer.0 -
As a guy who still prefers 3 pedals, I'd never own one.
Although if everyone really had one, you would cut out 99.5% of accidents and insurance companies would likely go under.0
