How many of you had coon skin caps in the 50s ?
I'm 71. I think every boy around my age had a coon skin cap because of Davey Crocket on TV in the 50s.
So how many of you had skin caps??

By God I did! I loved watching Davy Crockett on tv, hunting bears, fighting Indians, mixing it up with Mike Fink the riverman, and, finally, going to The Alamo. I couldn't get enough of that show. 0 -

I never got the cap but I did own one share of Davy Crocket?s mule.
I was hanging out at Smith?s store with the bunch that always hung out at the store before school. A boy came over and asked me if I had a dime. I told him I did. He said let me see it. I handed him a dime. He put the dime in his pocket and handed me a piece of paper.
The paper said ?Congratulations, you have bought one share of Davy Crocket?s mule. Don?t be an ass and whine, get you?re dime back like I got mine.
That was my introduction to the modern business world.0 -

kids 10 and younger didn't think about korea, other than the neat new airplanes being seen. polio, ya a few kids we knew went into the iron lung, then the vaccine came in. if you had the coonskin cap, then you probably had the toy musket and toy pistol with it. thats when you knew you was rich....but most kids just used their 6 shooters[caps] and bb guns instead. the poor kids still used their favorite stick. 0 -

I grew up in the Irish end of Albany, New York...for a nickle you could get an iron on portrait of Fess Parker as Davey Crockett..all the guys got one and had their mothers iron them on a white tee shirt...
All except one spoiled guy who was given everything he wanted....
as the rest of us stood around admiring our tee shirts....this guy Jimmy shows up dressed in a Davey Crockett costume...fringed shirt and pants....coons skin cap.....and a toy Kentucky rifle....
There was a moment of silence as we all stared at him....then like a scene out of Lord of the Flies...somebody yelled " Get Him!!"
We chased his azz all the way to his house...the sad thing is his parents never stopped spoiling him...
Fast forward ten years or so....I'm home on leave from overseas and I went to the local Legion Post with my Dad.....there sitting on a bar stool nursing a drink was this kids father with his head in his hands.
is spoiled son walks out of the men's room wearing a silk shirt...purple hot pants....white Go Go boots with a "man " purse...

I am 53 and I had one. My great-grandmother bought it for me at a Stuckeys. She was a hoot and lived to be 101. Maybe five feet tall on a stool, but she would whip your ass and make you think you liked it. 0 -

however my parents buying a coon skin cap was not any where in the budget food , rent , and such foolish things come first

Yup! Wore it faithfully when I played Mumbleypeg and marbles. Played Peenee in the Pot, and had a cache of shooters and steelies. 0 -

Early 60's right after Knotsberry Farm opened. Got mine there. Bet they no longer sell stuff like that. 0 -
Well, it was really rabbit fur but it had a real coon tail. Yep. I even had a real Kentucky rifle to play with. [:D] 0 -

no davy crockett hat but there was a craze for the union and confederate kepi army hats....i had a confed....and 30+ years later i got another well made one that is still warming a shelf...grandma was distant relative to the president of the south (i was told) 0 -
My brother wasnt born untill 1979 and myself in 1982. Ut we both had coonskin hats and ran around hootin and hollorin having fights with injuns and such.
I was about 5 and my dad made me a shotgun from a 2x4 for a stock and a 3/4in dowel for a barrel. I don't know how many hours I stalked around the yard and a couple of the neighbors yards shooting everything in sight.0 -

I remember getting the cap and rifle at Woolworth's with my mom and my aunt. We watched the show and had the record with the theme song.I think I went trick or treating as him one year. Actually, I think alot of kids did. 0
