33 years on death row-execution set--UPDATE

He now "sleeps with the fishes". Inmate Billy Ray Irick, 59, received a three-drug injection at a maximum-security prison in Nashville and was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., authorities said. He was convicted in 1986 in the death of Paula Dyer, a Knoxville girl he was babysitting.


NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee inmate Billy Ray Irick has been moved to death watch ahead of his scheduled execution on Thursday.

Death watch is the three-day period before an execution.

During this time, the inmate is placed in a cell next to the execution chamber and will remain under 24-hour observation by a team of officers.

The 59-year-old was convicted of rape and murder of a 7-year-old in 1985 in Knox County.

Advocates against his execution said he suffers from severe mental illness.

The last execution in Tennessee was in December 2009. Cecil Johnson had been convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in Davidson County.

    I have to wonder if it might just be worse. Think of waiting over thirty years to be executed. Appeal after appeal & perhaps many last minute stays. Not that I have any sympathy for them but it could be very hard to endure.

    I could never understand why a convicted felon on death row is awaiting execution for years and years when the evidence is irrefutable...after 365 days to let all the appeals get heard, the felon should take the walk and receive the punishment...period.

    Texas seems to have less trouble than anyone else getting the job done , but the State still drags it out for to long.

    The killer of my first cousin is sitting on death row in AZ . He's been there on the row for about 25 years now.

    My oldest brother was approached by a victims advocate not long after the killers arrest. My brother told her to let him go and we would take care of him. She seemed put off by that, but look at how much money the tax payers would have saved.
