I guess I am too old to shop anymore
I had to go into the big city today with the Wife,,Ran through Academy Sports to pick up some small stuff. At the register, paying with cash, the little girl told me I had to key in my zip code in the machine,, I told her NO. I am paying cash,,she insisted and again I refused. so she turned it around and keyed in one, I paid,,she ASKED if I wanted a receipt,,I stated yes because I would like to get out the door. Again she turned the little machine toward me and said she needed my e-mail,, I asked to get a receipt for something I paid for,, again she said yes and again I refused.. I then told her Academy has NO right to my name, phone number,zip code or e-mail address, I PAID cash,, She called a Manager,,he asked me what my problem was,,I gave him the same spill they were getting zilch,, I did not by a firearm,,I did not buy ammo and they were not getting my information,, after muttering a few words he keyed into the little machine and gave me my receipt.. NEXT .. Wife wanted to go across the road to Sams Club,, they had no people checking out, NADA ZERO, self checkout only,, Little manager of some sort offered to HELP me check out,, I told her I'm not stupid,,I know how,, I am just not going too,, if they can not get me someone to check out my buggy they can just put it back on the shelf,, she muttered a few words and checked me out.. I AM JUST TOO OLD

Our former office building required us to sign out if we left after 7PM. Security guards were a joke. Guy in charge of our office regularly would sign out as Robocop, Stan Musial or whatever popped into his head as he picked up the pen.

Problem is the bright kids who make up the rules about email, etc, have never done much "customer service" time and are totally about their computers and "the bottom line".
I understand them wanting zip codes -- they pay a lot of attention to how far their customers travel.0 -

I'm not old and I refuse to use those self checkouts. I figure if they want me to check out my items they better put me on their payroll first. And I don't work cheap! 0 -
I like the self check out at Home Depot and hate the ones at Sam's. Checking out a cart full at Sam's has me digging through the cart with no place to put the items I've scanned. 0 -

Several years ago our local Walmart changed all but one or two of their checkout lines to ?self service? and then stopped putting cashiers at the regular registers.
I would just go to the old style checkout line and settle in for a long wait. Eventually somebody would come over and tell me that line wasn?t open but they would be happy to show me how to do it myself. I would tell them I didn?t have anything else to do for a month or so, I?d just wait.
Shortly after that somebody would come over and check me out, and tell me this was the future and they would show me how to do it. I told them to tell the manager I would do the checkout as soon as they put me on the clock and added my name to the payroll.
As far as I knew I was the only person doing that, but after a month or so all the ?self service? registers were gone and the cashiers were back.
A few months ago the ?self service? registers were back and they are showing no signs of giving in this time, but they do always send somebody over to check me out.
I guess I?m too old to shop too, but I?m afraid I?m building a reputation as just a grumpy old man.0 -
When they ask me my phone number or ZIP code or any other personal information, I just tell them I have big hands and feet. Then I ask " do you know what it means when a person has big hands and feet?" They'll either say no or not say anything at all but will always turn red.... I then tell them it means I wear large gloves and shoes.[:D][:D] if she's female and cute, I'll ask her for her phone number. I collect a lot of phone numbers that way...[8D][8D] 0 -
Full service gas stations? Check tire pressure, oil and wash windshield. Was a pump jockey for a number of years. Don't guess there are too many of them around anymore.
Used to be one needed a crew to bale hay - Now it's one guy and some machinery. Too old for that non sense anymore
Anyone use the ATM rather than go into a bank for cash?
BTW - Can't stand the self service checkout. Won't use them. Probably all that will be available soon.
Eliminating expense = greater income. Business has been operating that way forever.
Last one out, please turn off the lights. Machines don't need them.

Academy and several other stores will ask for me to enter my Zip code. I never punch in the same one twice, and if they want my phone number, I have the local sheriff's office number memorized. Never been questioned about it. [}:)] 0 -
I agree with the OP 100%. Several stores around me asked for the same thing, but there must have been enough old folks like us complaining; all of them stopped it.
But, I know the reason for it. Corporate usually has a few young Marketing graduates who think that they can save the stores money spent on advertising by targeting certain zip codes, or specific categories of shoppers. When the store managers figure out that they are driving away customers, they insist on stopping the Inquisition.
I'm not unreasonable. When they put timers on the self check out lines, & rebate me the minimum wage based on how long check out takes me, then I'm willing to do that. Until them, cashiers only, or I walk out.

hate the self checkouts at walfart...credit card slot is hidden under the bottom at an angle with NO markings or tell how to do it with the old or newer cards..PITA..i roll up with cart full of pet food($150-200), same stuff together and with bar code UP and easy ..swipe it all with the checkout gun..if ya get a checker without an attitude it is fast and easy 0 -
I an getting used to the self check out and I kind of like it but then I don't have 20 bags of grocery's either. Produce is kind of a PITA but other than that I like self check outs.

I used to work at a small equipment store and repair facility, and we asked for zip codes only. If the customer declined, no big deal, they were still treated as valuable customers. As a result of the information obtained, we eventually opened a second store in a nearby community. Both stores are still thriving, and as far as I know, nobody's privacy was violated.
I also refuse to give phone number or e-mail. Radio Shack really used to irritate me when they were in business.0 -
We prefer self checkout at Sam's; you can get through checkout a lot quicker.

The only self check out I will do is at the gas pump at the big grocery store I get a 10 cent per gallon discount using my store card.
I have to enter my zip code in order to get my 10 cents.
When asked for an e-mail or phone number at the few check outs that do this, I just tell the cashier that I do not own a computer or a phone.[:)]0 -
Sam's club scan and go is a great way to check out at Sam's. Use their Scan and go app on your phone. Just scan barcodes when putting the items in the cart and total. Bypass the check outs show phone at door and go. 0 -

I don't mind the zip code thing because that really doesn't affect me at all. Giving them this info just lets them know where to focus their ads and such, but that isn't something that is specifically going to come to me or bother me really.
I never ever give an email or phone number out though.
I'm not a fan of self checkout, but I've never ran into a time that this was the only option to use. My daughter dragged me through one of those things the other day to pay for her things. It was SO FRUSTRATING to sit there behind this one woman that was s....l.....o....w....l.....y.............s....c....a......n.....n.....i......n.....g...... each item and bagging them. Ten people could have checked out in the time this woman took.
Society in general is going to turn into one of those powder keg things where only the MAJOR morons dare to go out and do anything because anyone with any common sense is going to hole themselves up in fear that "this might just be THE day I lose it" if they go out any more.0 -
