Got the FLU Shot Today
Looking forward to hearing the little girls here whine about having the flu in November. [:p]
There's a new shingles shot out since last year. Doc doesn't have it yet, but if you got the old shot, you should get the new one when available.
I've never had shingles, but I've been told it's like diabetic nerve pain that doesn't go away after a few seconds.

Gut our flu shots over a week ago. Have trips planned and don't want to come down with the flu during or after - like we did last year.
The new shingles shot is much more effective. It also comes in two doses you take a few weeks apart and makes you sore as hell in that arm for a few days. But not nearly as painful as shingles, they say.0 -

I wonder if they improved the flu shots this year? I read where they were only about 30% effective last year. I guess a little bit of protection is better than nothing if you're going to out among people.
My wife and I go into a sort of semi hibernation period from around Thanksgiving until spring instead of getting shots. It's worked for us several years now. We tell the kids, grand kids and great grand kids that we'll see'em in the spring. They'd rather get money in their Christmas card as see us old geezers bearing gifts that they wouldn't like anyway. [:D]
We stay away from crowds as much as possible. We only go to the grocery store once a month in the mornings when very few people are out. We schedule our bi-annual doctor appoints near the end of September and near the end of March or near the first of April just according to when flu season is over. We went a little early this year, we had our 6 month check up today and we didn't see any one hacking and coughing or barfing so hopefully we didn't catch anything. We're going to be driving across the country to Seattle starting this weekend so we wanted to get the doctors appointments out of the way. We'll be back home before November with enough traveling done to last us until next Spring.
Luckily my wife and I both like to fish and target shoot which we do quiet often during the winter since it hardly ever gets very cold around here. If it gets very cold and windy my wife has to stay in due to her asthma which is the main reason we hibernate to begin with. The flu world probably do her in.
Normally we have 2 to 3 weeks of what might be referred to as winter weather. People up north would probably just call it a little breezy spell. [:D]0 -

I got the Flu shot (high dose,old guy) last week.taking no chances.
Had the new Shingles vaccine (both shots), administered by the VA.
When I went in for the second shot the nurse advised they only received
20 doses.No idea when the next batch would be in.
I have been told that the Shingle series on the private market runs
upwards of $150.00.0 -

This "little girl" doesn't get the "flu" shot and have not had the flu since 1985. I DO, take precautions with handwash first thing when getting back in vehicle and alcohol hand wipe cart handles all the time. Whatever works for you.

When you make a living dealing with the public, it's rather hard to avoid coming into contact with sick people,....especially in Florida where all the sick Northerners transport their germs to in the winter.0 -
I was already at my Doc's office today so he popped me with a 4in1 flu vaccine,,he said I needed the extra with my diabetes and other issues 0 -
I refused for many years to get the flu shot. Then two years in a row the wife and I got the flu, worst experience of my life, and it put my wife in the hospital. Since then i get the flu shot. My work will be offering them in mid-Oct. 0 -

got the shingles shot several years ago..senior, social security, medicare, pharmacy plan, + BCBS supplemental and still had to pay about around $250...but had a friend with shingles ....avoid that at any cost 0 -

Spasm, as 55840 explained above, there's a new shingles shot. Even if you got the original one, get the new one. It's not true that only the VA has it. We got ours at the local Walgreen's.
Even with the high potency shot for seniors, the flu shot is a non-event. A bit of soreness maybe. But that's it. And you CANNOT get the flu from the shot.0 -

just got back from VA today, they had flu and pnumonia? shots but were out of the new shingles, nurse told me there was a national shortage, at least through VA. hope to get it come spring0 -

Ohh, I worked in the hospital for 26 years during that time, ..Just practiced hand cleaning to the max as a rule. We had those alcohol dispensers all around.
My old buddy some years ago died from the flu and he always got the shots, just don't believe in them much.0 -

I got a email from them, the hospital 2 1/2 hours away has them now, the CBOC will have them next week. I will be right by the CBOC tomorrow ( its a one hour drive from me) but will have to wait until the 5th of Oct to go back again.0 -
If you worked in a hospital, you ought to know that there isn't just one kind of flu. There are thousands of strains, some a lot more deadly than others. You also should know that a flu shot is not a panacea, prevents all, invulnerable prophylactic against flu.
But it IS a decent protection against the most expected flu strains in a given year, and at least a partial shield against other strains. If you get exposed to the predicted strain, you're probable golden. If you get hit by some other virus, the shot just might keep you from dying.0 -
I'll get Flu shots when returning to the U.S., Yep, they are FREE, paid by Medicare and my Advantage plan provider.[:D] Amazing, same cost as medical care for illegal aliens. 0 -
Shingles shots are in short supply but we found our's about 5 weeks ago.
Our Friend has both his shots thru the VA0 -
I have had at least one real nasty surgery, three Achilles repairs, two shoulder repairs, and one 10-Hour open heart and throat surgery! I would have any one of those before I would ever choose the shingles again! I was eating oxies like M&Ms and still would not cut the pain! Cried myself through the night for three weeks! Finally had a pain shot in my back that helped! Worst experience of my life and the 10-Hour surgery caused a 6 week hospital stay and nothing to eat or drink most of that time (5.5 weeks). Shingles is NOTHING to mess with! GET THE SHOT! 0
