Scrimshaw powder horn (Finished)
I just started drawing on this horn this evening, but had to take a break to rest my thumb. I haven't completed one in a while, so my hands are not used to the bearing down that scratching requires. I use an Ice-pick to scratch the norn, and it's quite painful after a while.
A friend ordered this horn from me for a gift she wants to give a friend. I can't say any names, because I think they are a GB member.
This is the picture I'm trying to put on the horn.

Have you ever tried a old metal tipped steel dart. When I used to be able to due that they worked great an was nice an comfortable to hold. 0 -

This a small horn, and the drawing isn?t but four by one inch total. The pictures here makes it look larger then it actually is.
Price on a scrimshawed horn depends on the size of the horn, and the amount of preparation I had to do on the horn. This horn was giving to me by the owner, and was already cleaned & polished, so all I had to do was sketch on it & scratch the sketch off.
I actually use a pencil to sketch the drawing on the horn, or whatever I?m drawing on before I scratch the drawing off. I then draw back over the scratched lines with I fine black felt pen. I then use steal wool to take off the excess or bleed over.
I have done knife handles, hand grips, and small pieces of ivory, but most of my drawings have been on cow horns.

Trinity, this would be so easy if we still had e-mail! I'm looking at 12" (tip to tip) sanded and polished horns. I'm interested in a wolf head (looking straight on). Your 1" x 4" size sounds good. I could send you a pic of the air brushed wolf head on the back of my jacket - but no e-mail. 0 -

Funny you should say that, because I do not sign my work. I put the three crosses (+++) on the bottom of the horn with the date completed. I do sign the inside of the cap if I make the entire horn, but you would have to disassemble the horn to find it.
There is a strong "FAITH" reason why I do what I do.
Several years ago I found a horn I did on a table at a gun show in Syracuse NY. The fella selling it was trying to pass it off as an antique, and wanted about $800 for it. I picked it up and asked him where he got it and he couldn't really tell me. I had made it for a local Friends of NRA banquet a few years earlier, and it sold there in an auction.
I asked him how he knew it was an antique?, and he asked me how I knew it wasn't? I then told him that I was the one who made the horn, and my sign the three (+++) date had been removed (sanded off) at the bottom. He looked like he had seen a ghost...[^] I laid the horn down, and walked off, but when I walked by later the horn was off the table. I hope someone wasn't ripped off by him, but in this case even if I had signed it he would have removed the signature too.

On a few of my larger horns & pictures I have done just that.
You would still almost have to use a magnifying glass to see it, but that's how I put scrimshaw on a horn in a picture, using magnifying optics.
