Opinions on Johnson City TN area, or other ideas?
I am considering moving south to get out of the Iowa crap weather. One place on my radar is the Johnson City/Bristol area. Looking for an area that is warmer but still has seasons. Good cost of living and demographics. Plus I am tired of living in a boring flat state. Love to camp and hike and Iowa is about as boring of state as you can get for outdoor activities. Mountains sound much more like my kind of scenery.

I live somewhat close to there. (Mtn. City, TN.) About an hour SE. Johnson City is a very good location to aspire to in my opinion. One of the several Colleges/Universities I attended was in Johnson City. East Tennessee State University. (ETSU.)
I've lived all over the Country, as an Army brat growing up, and having been in the Army myself. I elected to move back down here about 6 years ago.
Beautiful area. Erwin, TN. Not too far away, Nolichucky river gorge coming from NC. Skiing in Boone,NC. (Beech, Sugar, Hounds Ear, Wolf Lair, etc.) Gorgeous scenery not too far from JC. All around you.
In this area, JC is (and has been) pretty up and coming in its growth and Job availability. Same with Bristol TN/VA. (JlTrent lives near here as well.)
You could do MUCH worse.
I would be happy to speak with you more in depth if you wish.

As an aside, Sycamore Shoals, where the "Over Mountain Men," gathered in order to hike to Kings Mtn., GA. to become the first Americans to kick the British A$$e$ - is right near there as well.
That was a huge victory for the Colonies, and the morale booster they needed at that time. It proved the British could be beat.
These "Over Mountain Men" used Indian tactics, and pretty much slaughtered the British on Kings Mountain.
These Men came from my backyard, so to speak.

I moved from New Yuk to mid tenn. {just north of Nashville}
about 26 years ago. Loved it.
I have moved from there to the Crossville area {I-40 exit 311},
3 years ago. Love it even more!!
Cost of living is low, land is still cheap if you look for it.
VERY gun friendly.
As much as I enjoyed upstate NY, have no desire to go back and
put up with the left libatards that run that state.
Just had a friend down here who retired last year from Michigan,
Buy 7 acres and had a new 3 bed/2 bath house built for him for
less that 145,000.0 -

Rogue Rob lives and teaches in Johnson city tn. He would be your best contact. He checks into the forum from time to time. He is on Facebook more. My wife is from blountville TN just north of Johnson city and we still have relatives that live in that area. We get up there a couple of times a year to see them. 0 -

Agree. Moved down from the NY/NJ area about 6 years ago, once my Son turned 18. Bought a house and 3 acres (cash) that I would have paid $225K for easy up there. ($130K.) Not to mention Property taxes. I pay $450ish per year. I was paying $500/mo. Up North. Would be paying much more than that on my current House and property.
No Income Tax. Fairly high sales tax at 7.25% (?) But, that is fair, and based on purchases. I LOVE it down here.
Kinda grew up around here. Lots of relatives with Farm land. No matter where we lived in the World way back when, we'd come spend Summers here on the Farm. Always loved it.

Tons of History around these parts. Daniel Boone was very prominent in the area I live in, and further NW into JC.
Shouns Crossroads, about 7 mi. from my house was established in 1792.
Appalachian Trail, weaves in and out of this area. Roan Mtn. (AT) and "the Bald," gorgeous. Lots of High Mountain waterfalls. If you like the Outdoors, you'd Love it down here. Crossing over the Mountains on 421S from Bristol over "the Snake," (one of the top 10 motorcycle rides in the Country) into Shady Valley and on in to Mtn. City, TN. Is not to be missed. Incredible scenery. Whitwater rafting/Kayaking? Nolichucky River Gorge, Watauga, Nantahala, Ocoee, Laurel Creek, etc.
Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Linville Gorge, NC. Not to missed.

You might also want to look at Northern Georgia about 75 miles above Atlanta the country is very pretty. I used to do a lot of riding on my motorcycle up there.Take a look

Well I just booked a flight and hotel for Johnson City the week before Memorial day. Now I have a lot of research to do before I make the trip. If I move there I would want to find a lot to build on, 5 to 7 acres, and of course will need to find a job.
I found out about the area while I was hiking in Eureka Springs AR this summer, after meeting a couple out hiking who were moving to the Johnson City area and had bought 10 acres to build on. Wish I had got their info. They made it sound like paradise.0 -

I was involved in construction of the new interstate that runs down to Asheville. Beautiful country, rather steep. To build the last 4 miles of that road in TN, we dynamited 6.5 MILLION cubic yards of rock.0 -

Yes, the new Highway from Erwin, TN to Asheville, NC is in beautiful country.
I have a couple friends working for the Nuclear plant in Erwin.
That whole area, is beautiful. Head on over towards Boone, NC. it gets Gorgeous.0 -
Cleveland TN has a blustering economy and the diversity of the Chickamaga Lake and Cherokee National Forest. Chattanooga is just far enough away. 0 -
I've stayed 20+ weekends in Johnson City for Bristol races. Loved the area but probably the most interesting side trip was just across the border to Saltville. I was really impressed on how the salt was mined 150+ years ago and why that area had two large the War of Northern Aggression battles. 0 -

It would be a very good place to live. I was in Johnson City and Kingsport Thursday as my wife had a doctors appointment. It is close to the border of NC, several interstates are close, no state income tax, jobs available, college town, veterans hospital, the land is rolling, but as you go east closer to 84Bravo1 it gets more mountainous. You can be in Asheville NC in an hours drive, Knoxville, TN in an hours drive, Bristol race track in 15 minutes, etc. etc. etc. The climate is 70-90 degrees average in summer and 30-50 in winter. From time to time the weather can get a little more extreme, but doesn't last long.0 -
Depending the type of work you will be looking for another location you may want to look at is the Greenville/Anderson, SC area. One good feature of TN is that there is no state income tax. NC is beautiful but has higher taxes and is more liberal than SC and GA. 0 -

I like TN for it's non restrictive gun laws and no state income tax. NC is too liberal, and I like the idea of being on the west side of the mountains come hurricane season.
I have been in the low voltage/telecom industries most my career so would be looking for something in that area. Currently a tech for Centurylink, unfortunately they don't have much for jobs in TN.0 -

Now to just figure out logistics of trying to find jobs, find a place to live, and move A LOT of stuff 11 hours away. Would need to likely rent a place for 6 months to a year, while looking for land to build on and getting to know the area. Apartments are not an option, would have to be a house with a LARGE garage or pole building. So much to think about and plan. 0 -

a little more than a good apt.

You can go to zillow.com to check out house & land prices & availability. It's a safe site. But I would avoid clicking on a realtor's site as they'll try to get into your PC. 0
