Don't refinish it as you will remove it's character marks.

    just make it shoot.
    It earned it's blemishes.

Yeah, but the wood is soooooooooo pretty underneath. I have an insatiable itch to bring it out to its full potential![:p]

Maybe some Kroil on the safety will get it loose.

I would probably detail disassemble the gun and really clean it inside and out.

Use some Murphy's soap on the wood to see whats going on with it. Then some good furniture wax.

Hello - you sure that not a model 29 not a 25. Model 29s are bottom eject like an Ithaca model 37. The model 29 was 12 gauge only and only produced for something like 5 years.

I'm voting with "Sam06" and "Tflogger" and "jim_lamey" - DON'T do any refinishing or reblueing - just fix the stuck safety problem - and put a bunch of shells through it.

    Best Regards - AQH

What a neat gift. It's your gun, do what you want with it.

If it was mine, I would fix the safety, give it a cleaning, oil it up and run the hell out of it.

Another vote for just clean and use.
    It's a beautiful fine gift.
I certainly like that gun better than most of the new crap being produced today.
I love a gun with style, class, and a story........
    Good for you!

Like a Remington 17, which was 20 ga. only. I?ve got 5 of them.
In fact, that?s how I found GunBroker, looking for parts for a 17.

    Hello:

"My wife's brother's wife's grandfather used to own this Remington Model 25. Somehow they came up with the idea of gifting it to me, so I didn't say no!"

I took your word in the original post that it was a Remington and not a Winchester. The new photo clears up that part for me.

Nice pump shotgun made in only 12 gauge - at least that's the only thing I have ever seen.

It's yours and of course you many do with it as you wish but it still needs detail disassembly and cleaning.

    Best Regards - AQH

It?s your call but I vote for the clean it up and let it have character. I have some refinished guns and somehow the redo makes it feel like a cheap plastic surgeon had some fun with my wife and gave her back. Jmho

I had an old model 12, 16ga reblued and wood refinished, it had been very well used. I wanted it to look maybe not new, but newer, then I could put my own nick, scratches and own personal hunting scars in it.....

Update: So, I went to clean this yesterday... not an easy task. Most of the screws were too tight for me to break free. However, I was able to free up the safety, which works properly now. The only thing I could really take apart was the buttstock cover. I did find an interesting treat inside:

I don't know how old they are, but it's interesting what you find in hiding places![:D][8D]

As far as refinishing & re-bluing, it looks like all you haters are going to get your wish...I can't restore it to like-new condition if I can't get it apart! [:p]

    How cool is that!!
I did find an old hunting license under a butt plate once a long time ago!
And a friend found a couple rounds of ammo wrapped tight in a rag under one also.
I've also heard stories of a photo and a nd some paper money.
Matches? that's a new one for me!! So cool!
    Thanks

Despite recent inaccurate usage in social media and on TV gifted is an adjective not a verb. You were given a shotgun.

    [:D]sorry pet peeve.

if you refinish that wood, you are forever going to be nervous about getting scratches on it.

    just let it go.

But they would be MY scratches from MY adventures.

The value of a gift such as this is what the recipient makes it, it is not counted in money but by other measures. You choose those measures. Enjoy it as it suits you, that was what the gift was intended for.

    So....UPDATE:

I've refinished the buttstock and it is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous underneath. I'm so glad I refinished it! It's got some fantastic tiger stripes going against the grain... I'll post pics soon.

I took the remainder of the shotgun to a smith, who was able to get the main screw loose from the trigger assembly. He disassembled the forestock, as well, so I could refinish that wood, as well. It's not as nice as the butt, but then again, what is? ;)

Anyway, I actually have a question and need y'all's expertise... the bold was left in, but it slid forward and is no LOCKED in the closed position. How do I get it to slide back so I can continue cleaning (it was REALLY dirty)? Keep in mind there are no other parts connected to the bolt, as the rest of the hardware is disassembled.
