My poor Jack died last night, sweetest Golden ever
Jack went down very quickly, so that was as much of a blessing as it could have been. I was pretty upset with our vet over the way he handled Jack. I took him to see the vet in October when I noticed he wasn't acting quite right. He wasn't eating as much as he normally would and he moaned a bit while laying around.
The vet gave him some antibiotics and felt of him and said "he can stand to loose some weight" . Jack went from 110 pounds to 80. He was getting pretty thin very quickly. I took him back and INSISTED that they run some tests. He looked at his lungs and said it was either a bacterial infection or cancer, but they wouldn't know right away. We went with some meds that would help the bacterial infection if that was the problem.
Within a couple weeks he was so thin his spine and ribs were very visible. He was just giving up and it was happening fast. He had the entire family there with him petting his face and talking to him when he passed. I told Larry it was the nicest way it could have happened.
We will miss him so much. If any of you have a Golden you know just how sweet they are.

I'm very sorry for your loss Casey. Who ever penned the old expression that a dog is man's best friend, had a Golden Retriever!
We lost our "Archie" a bit over 2 years ago at the age of 9 and both my wife and I are still mourning his absence.[V]
We replaced him with "Corky" a nearly pure white English Golden and he took a shine to me that no other dog I have ever owned has come close! My companion, my shadow, my K-9 pull apart! Everyday with Corky is a day that God has gifted to me!0 -
This one was tough.
I have several dogs, but Jack was just such an angel its hard to even think about him without it just being a crying mess. We lost Huggy this year...he was a 17 year old white Pomeranian. He hung on like a trooper until the very end. Jack dwindled a bit for a month, until the last week which was a bit of a struggle.
I don't "blame" the vet for Jack's demise and I don't think there was anything he could have done to make him live longer.....but when I took him to be checked out in October if they had run any tests at all they would have been able to tell me he didn't have long to live and I would have made this last month a steak and chicken finger dream come true for poor Jack. I've never been much to give them people food because you just don't want to wake up to anyone's puke or accidents in the middle of the night....but I would have done anything for this dog to make his last days better. The day before he died I was feeding him chicken and dressing with my fingers because that was all he would eat and I was shocked he would even do that.
I have a St Bernard and an English Bulldog now.....both are wonderful, but they certainly aren't Jack. I feel like a bad mom saying that.
I don't know if I can handle any more losses like this, so I will have to think about getting any other pets.0 -

I've felt the pain you're experiencing too many times.
You could'nt have possibly done more right by him Kasey.
When he breathed his last, he knew he was truly loved.
We should all be so lucky.

Just what is it about dogs? I've hunted with labs for 45 years now and when one departs I greve more so than when my father died? Sorts make me feel guilty in a way. 0
