My poor Jack died last night, sweetest Golden ever

Jack went down very quickly, so that was as much of a blessing as it could have been. I was pretty upset with our vet over the way he handled Jack. I took him to see the vet in October when I noticed he wasn't acting quite right. He wasn't eating as much as he normally would and he moaned a bit while laying around.

The vet gave him some antibiotics and felt of him and said "he can stand to loose some weight" . Jack went from 110 pounds to 80. He was getting pretty thin very quickly. I took him back and INSISTED that they run some tests. He looked at his lungs and said it was either a bacterial infection or cancer, but they wouldn't know right away. We went with some meds that would help the bacterial infection if that was the problem.

Within a couple weeks he was so thin his spine and ribs were very visible. He was just giving up and it was happening fast. He had the entire family there with him petting his face and talking to him when he passed. I told Larry it was the nicest way it could have happened.

We will miss him so much. If any of you have a Golden you know just how sweet they are.

    I am so sorry.

    I have a Jack the Golden too. They are the sweetest most loving dogs in the world.

    I think I would look for another Vet. I had one tell me "its Just a dog" one time. I told him "In all your days you will never be closer to death than you are now" Needless to say I found a new one.


    Positive vibe and good thoughts sent to you and your family from Me Jack and Charlie.

    BTW the best thing to do is get another Dog ASAP.

    Sorry about your loss. Very heartbreaking to lose a pet (member of the family). Loss my little Tazz this past May and think of him everyday.

    Our dogs are only with us for a short visit, We know that but it still breaks our hearts when they have to leave. It does give us the opportunity to have more than one dog in our life. My last Brittany was the toughest. He was with me everywhere from Baja to Alaska. Find another vet. You will never completely trust the current one again.

    Sorry for your loss Kasey, yes it is the hardest part of having a dog. Rest assured he is running with Casey, Weber, and Kahlua and they are waiting for us on the other side looking for a treat. Damn dust around here is gettin to me. Sorry once again and condolences.

    Sorry you lost your little buddy. I had a Golden years ago. IMO they are the best dogs out there. Smart, gentle, devoted, great with children, all the best traits in a dog.

    It is possible the doctor could have a better bedside manner, but if the doctor had definitively told you the diagnosis was cancer and the prognosis was terminal, what would you have done differently?

    Very sorry for your loss Kasey.

    Very good you were all around him, petting him, when he passed.

    I'm sure he appreciated it, as well as those that loved him.

    My childhood dog - a mixed mutt puppy store purchase named Shep - died from cancer which was caught early and she was relieved of suffering by the vet

    We adopted Mac - a mostly black lab with white socks on 3 paws from the pound shortly before he was to be put down - he was a great dog but we only had him for 3 years before cancer and the vet helped

    My second dog Reggie a pure blood red lab rescue of enormous size - a true athlete and working dog - also succumbed to cancer - and we probably held on to him to long before the vet ended his pain

    We last year had a ferret reach six years and six months before being diagnosed with cancer - again the vet was there

    The worst part for me is not only watching them suffer or struggle with pain or impairment - it's swing the shame in their eyes when the urinate or defecate in the house - non longer able to control their bodies - or the abject sadness when they can no longer perform their family functions or pack duties

    So I choose to remember them young and fit and happy and productive

    I am very sorry for your loss
