Maximum effective range of 4? .357

Honestly, in my opinion I would keep the shots inside of 100 yards. Check and see how many foot pounds of energy it still has at 100 yards. You will need at least 800 ft pounds of kinetic energy to disrupt enough tissue and vitals to make a clean humane kill.

    Best of luck, Don

Go with the .357 so you can "fan it". Pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew [:D].

A 357 with good ammo should be able to take a Antelope with no problem as long as you do your part.

Your max range will be where you can put 4 out of 6 in an 8" target from a field rest. I like to use paper plates, the cheap ones.

Antelope are built light so it should be fine.

Make sure you can hunt with a 4" most states require 6" barrel that I have Handgun hunted in.

personally 100 yards, that 6 inch circle sounds good, but a 6 inch miss of the heart and you have a wounded antelope. 3 inch miss and it will still run off and die. I have a 357 rifle, I would not take a shot over 100 yards with it. ballistics go down fast from there on. but at 100 yards and in, they are very close to 30-30, not sure from a 4 inch barrell how much you would loose over rifle 18-20 inch long. I use 158 grain hollowpoints self defense rounds, have shot 2 nice 8pts and neither one bled any at all just few drops, but insides were jelly both made it about 40-50 yards and dropped dead, but that first instinct is damn how could I have missed!!! good luck

Rifle or pistol? And if pistol, what length a barrel

    A pistol with a 4 inch barrel, I wouldn't use it more then 30-40 yards... 2 inch barrel, 20 maybe 30 yards, 6 inch barrel, 40-50 yards, 8 inch barrel 50-70 yards

    A rifle, 100-225 yards

As a side note, why does everybody come on here asking advice without giving all the perimeters such as length of barrel. That's like asking how long will it take me too drive from point A to point B without giving what location point A is and what location point B is...

It does it say a 4-inch pistol on my screen... It just says "4?.357"

I guess I should really just buy a computer instead of using my smartphone. But I'm just too cheap to do that[:I]

    Ever bow hunt?

I?ve never had a deer run after being shot with a .223 but have had them change zip codes after being shot with a 7mm Mag, I think a good lung shot or heart shot will make for a dead critter that is smaller than a PA whitetail.

Rem, 4? is mentioned twice, once in the subject and in paragraph 3.

So it appears that 100 or less should be fine, I?ve been close enough to smell them (bow range) so it sounds like this should be easy.

Next I need to find some good hard hitting ammo to try out, sure wish gun shops sold Sampler Packs!

With the shooting you reported/claimed, I'd stick to 100-yard shots as max. You might have to adopt bowhunting tricks such as sitting in a blind at a waterhole to do that, but it's definitely doable. doubly so since you say you already have used a smokepole. If you cast, the Lee 158 RNFP is a great hunting bullet. That wide flat point drills through straight and true.

I?d suggest a tree stand, but...

    I've taken 7 deer with a .357 4 inch revolver.
10 to 50 yards, they all tasted good.

I hunt Eastern Whitetail with a .357 Dan Wesson, 10 inch bbl. 185 grain hard cast handloads. I keep it to 50 yards or less, and they are not going more than 50 feet. But THAT load and THAT revolver is hotter than the one you mention.

    Your data:
American Eagle 158 gr from a 4 inch- zeroed at 50 yards-
    50 yds 455 ft lbs
    100 yds 396 ft lbs 5.8" low
    200 yds 321 ft lbs 41.2" low

Why make an animal suffer so you can play cowboy? Not fair to the animal.

Life isn't fair, soyboy. Who said anything about either making an animal suffer, or trying to play cowboy?

He's confident in his weapon, and confident in his ability to take the shot. Nothing wrong with taking a deer with a .357 at a reasonable distance, and had you read the OP, anything up to 100 yards would be easy for him.

Lots of comments from some that obviously have never done it. I've taken several deer with a 357 revolver and like the one post...they all tasted good! As long as the hunter does his part by practicing , learning his limits , and staying within them , there is nothing different about this method vs anything else used to hunt deer...

Yep. As long as you get a good clean kill shot in an effective range of what you're using...

Saying what you can do and doing it are quite different. A lot of pure fiction on this forum and we all know it.

Feel free to provide one example of what you'd consider "fiction", and who is this "we" you speak of?

Other than showing up around once a month, to ask stupid questions while feigning ignorance, or going full-tilt retard with that crankholster like you're doing right now, where do you fit in here as far as participation goes, exactly?

Guess I?ll take a quick 5 minute ride tomorrow and video me shooting 300 yards then grouping at 100. Although he?ll just claim camera tricks [:o)]

Within bow range And I suggest a solid not a expanding hollow point

Using that 4? .357 with the right ammo how far would you trust it to drop an antelope which is smaller than a PA whitetail? I know 300 yards is too far but so far with a rest I can put an entire cylinder into a 6? target at 100 yards without even trying hard.

Federal made a 180gr flat point lead bullet round called a vital shock or something like that.

I have no experience with them because I used a 44 mag and my own handloads, but I have a friend who uses a 357 and he liked them.

In my 30 years of handgun hunting using everything from revolvers to TC's, in a pistol caliber I recommend a non expanding bullet with a flat nose and made of hard lead.

These are expensive but have a good rep as a killer:
    https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=100

Look at the buffalo bore, or if you handload check these guys out. I have used their bullets with success in many applications:

    http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm

The key is bullet placement and penetration.

Good practice and to determine your maximum range; get a box of clay pigeons set them up at different ranges and practice using a field rest until you can him them 4 out of 6 times.

Lastly I say again make sure a 4" revolver is legal. Some states like here in NC have a barrel length and min power level.

Hunting laws are confusing, you should see the off shore fishing regs here in NC, you need a Marine Biologist and a Lawyer to make sure you are legal.

I find that interesting that a .223 drops your kills DRT and a 7mm Magnum doesn't.

Maybe you missed with the Magnum do to recoil anticipation LOL

And if you read that as I?m going to shoot 300 yards with a handgun at an antelope you are just as stupid as Maxine Waters.

Why in the hell do people comment on things with the only objective to be sideways trying to make someone look bad? You are no better than some damn demoncrap who slanders our president everyday.

How about not twisting what I say in order to make yourself appear to be some superior being trying to save the world? It makes you look stupid.

You know those threads about people leaving this forum? It?s because of contrary arseholes like you who only want to cause trouble.

Years ago I killed several deer with a Rossi 4" .357, the longest shot was about 70-75 yards. Lots of choices in ammo, I used what ever 158 grain hollow points was in stock at the hardware store at the time.

I have a 4" GP 100 now, I need to find a round it likes. But, when I deer hunt now I carry the .454. I've taken deer to 125 yards with the .454.

I need to go to the store and buy some different ammo, this American Eagle stuff is just cheap entertainment ammo that I like to waste shooting at rocks way outside the ranges one would normally shoot a handgun. I?m curious about how hot of loads this thing can handle since it is a 7 shot and the cylinder walls are not as thick as a 6 shot.

I?ve killed one deer with a handgun, a Taurus M44 .44 Mag with a ported barrel. I almost dropped the gun after shooting because that was th first time I fired that gun without hearing protection, felt like someone jammed a Bowie knife in my ear.
