Maximum effective range of 4? .357
Not sure what ammo to try yet but I know with these American Eagle flatnose loads I can bounce bullets all over a target at 300 yards, yes I love to see how far I can shoot and the Glock 45 is scary accurate at 300 yards as well using cheap Remington hardball ammo!
Anyhow, I now have 2 antelope tags for my back yard, so far I have killed antelope with the muzzleloader and shotgun. Thinking this year it is time for the bow and pissibly the .357, why not eh?
Using that 4? .357 with the right ammo how far would you trust it to drop an antelope which is smaller than a PA whitetail? I know 300 yards is too far but so far with a rest I can put an entire cylinder into a 6? target at 100 yards without even trying hard.

In my 30 years of handgun hunting using everything from revolvers to TC's, in a pistol caliber I recommend a non expanding bullet with a flat nose and made of hard lead.

The key is bullet placement and penetration.
Good practice and to determine your maximum range; get a box of clay pigeons set them up at different ranges and practice using a field rest until you can him them 4 out of 6 times.
Lastly I say again make sure a 4" revolver is legal. Some states like here in NC have a barrel length and min power level.
Hunting laws are confusing, you should see the off shore fishing regs here in NC, you need a Marine Biologist and a Lawyer to make sure you are legal.
the early federal 180 flat points came out for the 357 rifles but I used in my ruger with 6 inch barrel, they were awesome at up to 100 yards0 -
BSR I hunted WTD for years with a S&W 28 with 4" barrel. Constant practice with a pie plate at 100 yards. All my hunting shots were between 45 and 70 yards. I used hand loaded 158 gr JHP's and all shot in the boiler room. All ran less than 50 yds. The hand loads all had exit wounds. Trauma inside was massive. Also have 158 gr XTP's. My longest pistol shot on central Il deer was 96 yards with a Ruger Super RedHawk in .44 mag.
She ran under 50 yards then DRT.
I'm guessing you'd be good at 100 on a prong with a .357.

.357 loaded with Buffalo Bore?s Outdoorsman load should have no problem taking a antelope or deer at 100 yards....as long as you can do your part.

I?ve killed one deer with a handgun, a Taurus M44 .44 Mag with a ported barrel. I almost dropped the gun after shooting because that was th first time I fired that gun without hearing protection, felt like someone jammed a Bowie knife in my ear.
Had to chuckle when I read this about your ears. I know exactly what your saying. I'm sitting here listening to the ringing in my ears that I hear 24/7. I have a 6" S/W model 19 I bought in 1982 that I have shot one time without ear plugs. I walked down to the pond one day and realized I had forgot to take ear plugs and thought I could take it just this one time. One shot was all it took. Have taken deer with a S/W 629 without earplugs that didn't seem near as bad as that 357.0
