Finally got a deal on an engine for the Chevelle
I hate to take advantage of someone needing money, Lord knows I have been in that place many times myself. But when this guy said $250 for a running 70s BBC 454 I had no choice but to load that puppy up on the wifes pickup last night! Now I guess that the SBC I have at the machine shop being stroked to a 383 is going to need a home, maybe a mid 70s Vette! The Chevelle will officialy be a Big Block Chevelle, woohoo!! The thought of putting that 383 in that car has had me depressed, I wanted a 454 and have been looking for one for several years but didn?t want to pay collector prices, patience paid off [:D]

Wow, I didn't know that they ran that much!
I have a Dodge 440 in a 1974 Motorhome with 34.000 miles on it that I was going to let go for 500.00!
It has a forged crank and six pack rods.
I think guys from Roadkill put that motor in General Mayhem way back when.
If you really want to sell it that cheap put my name on it!
Seriously though, if it has no woodpeckers making it a good builder that engine is easily worth over $1000. I would like to have it, have to find something to put it in though. Wait, I still have that T-Bird, I have a plasma cutter, torches and a welder, I could do something totally crazy!!0 -

I have wrenched on a number of rat motors back in the days. Really screamers in Chevelles, Novas, and Camaros. Also wrenched many Ford FEs and small blocks.
Interesting to see a Q-Jet. Used to work on them as well. Could not believe how expensive they are now. Metering pin kits for them have gone thru the roof if you can find them. Still have a few Q-jets boxed up somewhere. Back in my days, everyone want to get rid of a Q-jet and replace with a Holley. Guilty of that practice myself.
I used to be the go-to guy back home when it came to Q-jets, I could make those things work as good as a Holley. Make them sound like a toilet flushing with no hesitation, I love those carbs for street use. Only problem is being a spreadbore making it difficult to put them on anything other than a GM without spending money on an intake that is hard to find and I hate those damn leaking adapters.0 -

Lonnie I too always wanted a blower sticking out of the hood. when I started my Camaro build I did a lot of checking and talking to people who have them and drive them.
out of the 10 or so people I talked to, most actually advised me against it for what I wanted to do with the car. which was drive it long distance. most told me the engine would run hot above 30-40 miles
I suggest you talk to some people in your area and see what they have to say.
there again I don't know what your driving habits will include
I am sure of the changes that will have to be made going from SB to BB.
just a few off the top of my head
front springs
rear suspension for TRACTION
engine frame stands
radiator and possibly radiator support
transmission cross member
transmission built to take the torque
rear to take the torque
better brakes
fuel system
I wish you luck with your project
REMEMBER, as stated above take pictures of before and after every thing you do
I learned a long time ago that letting others talk you out of the things you want just leaves you with regret. I know a few people that run blowers and have no issues. They guy with the blown 454 for sale built it for his boat but pulled it out because it was destroying lower units, too cheap for a built jet drive I suppose.
A lot of guys don?t like the price tag that comes with a blower and with the new fad of turbos and nitrous being the norm without having to build a blower specific bottom end most folks shy away.
But they make power off idle and the torque curve can be extreme. Many benifits of running a blower but cost is a turn off, I?m not in that big of a hurry that I can?t take my time buying parts and pieces.
The suspension is being purpose built. Another one of my dreams is Pro Street, I have an Art Morrison back half kit, just nervous about cutting that frame in half. It is set up for a 4 Link suspension and I?ll be able to put some huge meats under the car. Front suspension will be redone as well. I?ve built this car 1000 times in my head, every single aspect of it thought about and considered. I can see the finished product in my head and if patient I?ll get it done.
This video right here, gives me goosebumps. The Camaro, image it being a ?68 Chevelle instead, that is what I?m wanting.

From an outside and objective point of view, you're just being a dick.
When did the 'I'm (easily) offended', 'sensitive' democraps take over the forums?
It takes two to tango.
Edit: Thanks for the insight Gregor. If you are well and truly an engineer then you know that arguing w/ an engineer is like wrestling with a pig. After a while you realize the pig is enjoying it.
But as long as you're happy..... (I fail to see the hidden meaning in those six words, but then again, I'm NOT the rocketoligists BSR and Oak stump are.[}:)])
I understand the issues you are dealing with, a cool cloth applied to the forehead will help with hot flashes.
hahaha
I really think that fella was suffering from Erectile Dysfuntion yesterday0 -
TBI maybe? Two fours popping out look cool, but you have to cut the hood. Find a TBI system off an early 80s truck. JMO 0 -

Setup on the 6.2 LS engine wasn't too bad. New oversize injectors, supercharger, Lingenfelter dual fuel pump, long tube headers,0 -

I have not rebuilt one in 15 years. They were the most difficult of all to rebuild until I got a Aisin 2 BBL from a Toyota.
Yep, I remember the adapters and they were POS. I always went with the Edelbrocks intakes. Chevy intakes were so easy to change. You done well on that Rat, the carb alone if working is worth at least a couple hundred.
Brings back memories of the Ford FE manifolds, They weighed a ton, always replaced them as well.
Did an older Ford truck with a 390 as my last project. Went with Edelbrock and Holley0 -
Good News, if the block has no freeze cracks then 250.00 for a good 4 bolt core is a great purchase. Anything can be done with lots of money.
I have so much General Motors, and other makes as well, and after market equipment on shelves and pallet racks, well I will never use it all, but I will try, says the wife. Does that make me an expert, no way, but I do know my way around pre computer equipment, and Trust no one with my final assemblies.
If you decide to assemble the engine after machine work, check ALL clearances to your satisfaction. Just because the shop says it is ok does not mean it is for your application. Just make sure they are aware what the final assembly is for. Blower setup, carburetor, fuel injection, diesel, propane, nitrous everyone likes their own clearances, setup. Clean, clean, clean.
Having fun is what does it for me. The satisfaction of putting down the hammer, at the Dragstrip [;)] in the Dirt or on the Rockpile, in my woods up or down the valley, well is damn FUN. But having friends share the time of assembling vehicles is fun also.
MotorCraft, Predator, Autolite, Stromberg, Holley, Rochester, Carter, Edelbrock, Marvel Schebler, Zenith, Mikuni, Weber, all are good carburetors you just need to understand how to make them work with the modifications needed. Air bleeds are the most clogged or misunderstood adjustments to any performance unit.
Big Blocks are heavy, so the more weight off the nose the better.
Good Luck in your Venture and have Fun [:D]0 -
I think you got a slamming deal. I wanna see it when you get her installed. That engine is going to really make that chevelle. Had a 1970 Chevelle SS back in HS. Miss that car. I know you will have it purring. Oak. 0
