Finally got a deal on an engine for the Chevelle
I hate to take advantage of someone needing money, Lord knows I have been in that place many times myself. But when this guy said $250 for a running 70s BBC 454 I had no choice but to load that puppy up on the wifes pickup last night! Now I guess that the SBC I have at the machine shop being stroked to a 383 is going to need a home, maybe a mid 70s Vette! The Chevelle will officialy be a Big Block Chevelle, woohoo!! The thought of putting that 383 in that car has had me depressed, I wanted a 454 and have been looking for one for several years but didn?t want to pay collector prices, patience paid off [:D]

There are a few hotrodders here I would love to sit at a bar with and pick thier brain and debate ideas, some talented folks. Then there are some who have a head full of ideas and never act upon them. I would rather fail trying than I would simply daydreaming and never acting on it.0 -

As far as a show stopper, I?m putting together what I have always wanted. I?m no pro, maybe a progressed amature but I get a ton of satisfaction from making junk run. Except that 390, whoever built that pile of crap used the wrong cam and intake combo, can?t use a vaccum secondary carb, can?t use a Edelbrock carb, makes half the power it should and I regret fixing it.0 -

I have never had the chance to be a car nut , although I they'd a few things in my life that were ruined by my bad marriage.
Biggest engine was a 429 in my 66 Cadillac. I had an early Dodge with what must have been one of the first Hemi engines. If my recall is correct it was a 1954 .
I had a very nice 1955 Chevy convertible in high school which I traded in on a new motorcycle. (very stupid). I managed to pick up a 1931 Willis Knight soft top coupe that was destined to become my hot rod project. I had had a GM V6 motor with an auto tranny I was going to drop in it. It was going to be a fun driver, not out to break speed records. A 1964 Dodge Dart convertible that was going to be a nice project. And the last I will mention is a 1955 Ford 2 door sedan Police car I bought in Nebraska with less than 40 K miles on what I believe was what they called the Police interceptor motor at the time. A 312 wearing a nice 4 barrel Holy carb. I think that was the same motor they put in the 55 T-Bird ?(been to long and my memory to short)
22 years in a demanding job and a bad marriage put all those projects sailing off to other people. Then disability since has me without the means to even think about such projects.

I have wrenched on a number of rat motors back in the days. Really screamers in Chevelles, Novas, and Camaros. Also wrenched many Ford FEs and small blocks.
Interesting to see a Q-Jet. Used to work on them as well. Could not believe how expensive they are now. Metering pin kits for them have gone thru the roof if you can find them. Still have a few Q-jets boxed up somewhere. Back in my days, everyone want to get rid of a Q-jet and replace with a Holley. Guilty of that practice myself.0 -
Lonnie I too always wanted a blower sticking out of the hood. when I started my Camaro build I did a lot of checking and talking to people who have them and drive them.
out of the 10 or so people I talked to, most actually advised me against it for what I wanted to do with the car. which was drive it long distance. most told me the engine would run hot above 30-40 miles
I suggest you talk to some people in your area and see what they have to say.
there again I don't know what your driving habits will include
I am sure of the changes that will have to be made going from SB to BB.
just a few off the top of my head
front springs
rear suspension for TRACTION
engine frame stands
radiator and possibly radiator support
transmission cross member
transmission built to take the torque
rear to take the torque
better brakes
fuel system
