Scope bite!
After getting fed up with wet foggy scope lenses I put on a set of Butler Creek flip up lense covers. Got into the elk this morning, not done with the hunt yet but I got one hit pretty hard but he got onto a private ranch, the rancher is going to take to to try and find him, hopefully that story ends well a d I can lost the rest of it later!
Anyhow, shooting off bipods, relaxed waiting for that bull to step into the open, one hand on the rifle, I let the shot go. After everytning settled down it felt like my face was covered in sweat, wiped my face and got a handfull of blood with chunks of skin. The .300 WinMag kicked just a little and now Imm rethinking those scope covers! Found a chunk of skin on the little lever also! Ouch!!

Not sure what he will dress out at but we should yield around 150# of meat from it.
He?s not a monster bull but I?m happy, this is the first elk I?ve killed at the house so I?m happy with that. Lived here permantly since 2012, was a long wait!
I don?t want to turn this into a religious thread but I want to add this. Every year I have been sneaking up on these elk but could never make it happen, I either missed or did something wrong that caused me to come back to the house with no elk. Even this year during archery and gun season I just could not get close enough to score. Even when that section to the north of my house was opened up to rifle last year I could not even get a cow elk. Well yesterday I did something, as I?m walking up the fence line I bowed my head, just staring at my feet as I?m walking and I prayed, I confessed to a lot of bad things I?ve done, I asked him to please let things work this time. After that it was a whole new game, I was able to work the herd, got real close to some cows ut not having a cow tag I could only shoot a bull. This bull opened up, range was long but I?ve been shooting this rifle at crazy distances this year and I felt confident, I hit him where I wanted but that bullet just did not connect like it should have, never made it through the shoulder. Then, after knowing the ranchers here don?t like transplants the ranch to my north helped me and was very generous. We couldn?t get in him last night, too many cows so we decided to wait till morning. This morning I woke up, watched it get daylight and that herd was back beside the house! Suited up and went up, found my elk limping through the herd and went after him. Using a cow call I was able to chirp and mew my way right to that herd, some of those cows were less than 150 yards. I got to that bull at 200 yards after working the herd around, flipped out the bipods and BANG, I saw a puff of dust come off him but he kept walking, racked another one and BANG, heard that bullet go THWAP! But he kept walking only real slow, quartering away I put the crosshairs at the back of the ribcage and BANG! He took a couple steps and fell, woohoo he is down!!
Those ranchers yesterday, that elk fell close to thier property line, I called and asked if I could drag it to thier line instead of humping it a mile to my house. Not only did they agree but they drug it out for me and loaded it in my pickup! I gave them a brand new half gallon of Makers Mark which got opened up on the spot, they loved it!
So no, this is not a big bull, not even big enough to have mounted but he is going to be a nice addition to my freezer and I am gratefull for the help in getting him. Finally got an elk at my home. And yes, I gave many thanks above, thanks for the elk and for the awsome rancher neighbors we have. My hunting season is over even though I still have tags.0 -

Yes, he got his this afternoon, don?t have a pic right now but that bull was twice the size of mine! I coulda shot that one this morning but I let him walk and took the one I gimped up.

If you were doing your part that ammo should have performed better. If it was me I would look at another load.
If you don't reload and use factory ammo this is the best long range hunting load; Hornady Precision Hunter:

Its not cheap but it really performs well at all ranges up to 800 yards.
If you plan on shooting the 300 win mag at long range I would step up to a 200gr bullet.

This is strange because my .300 is a Howa 1500, I have another Howa 1500 in 25-06 and niether one of those rifles will shoot heavy bullets.
The .300 will shoot 150s and cut holes at 200 yards, 180s are still at an inch at 200 yards. But go to 200+ grain bullets and 200 yard groups resemble a load of 00 buck at 50 yards.
The 25-06, with 80G bullets it will cut holes out to 300 yards but go to 100G and above and it will not keep 5 shots on paper at 100 yards!!
I?m replacing both of those rifles, the Howa 25-06 will be sold or traded for a better 25-06, the .300 will be kept as a deer rifle and replaced with something heavier. Right now I have a few heavy magnums in mind, the .338 Lapua, 30-378WTBY, .308 Norma and a couple others. If I have to spend $2-3000 on a hard hitting long range gun I will do so because after it taking 3 shots at 200-250 yards yesterday to put this elk down with ammo it shoots well I am done hunting elk with it. It will make a good deer rifle but ammo needed to take down an elk it won?t shoot. I learned a big lesson about that gun, no more elk hunting with it.0 -
That is too bad, Howa makes a good rifle, I had one on 3006 and it was a really nice rifle that shot well. I gave it to a good buddy so he would have a hunting rifle.
I know you travel a lot but while you are out try to find a dealer who sells Bergara Rifles.
I shot one in 6.5 C and another in 308 with a can they are really nice. It was a smooth and accurate as my Accuracy International rifle at 1/2 the price.
The 300 mag has a 26" barrel and that will make a huge difference. It would be a 11# rifle with a good scope and rings but that is not too bad IMO.

I even considered a Lazzeroni rifle in .338 but not sure I can handle $7000 for a rifle plus there are some crappy reviews aiming that $7000 rifle won?t shoot any better than a rifle 1/3 of the price. 0 -

Lonnie, You might want to check out the 340 weatherby magnum . I have the 30-378 weatherby and the 340 weatherby. Both are equal to or better than the 338 Lapua and they can be had for under 2000.00. They are my elk guns and I hunt deer with a 257 weatherby. 0
