Scope bite!
After getting fed up with wet foggy scope lenses I put on a set of Butler Creek flip up lense covers. Got into the elk this morning, not done with the hunt yet but I got one hit pretty hard but he got onto a private ranch, the rancher is going to take to to try and find him, hopefully that story ends well a d I can lost the rest of it later!
Anyhow, shooting off bipods, relaxed waiting for that bull to step into the open, one hand on the rifle, I let the shot go. After everytning settled down it felt like my face was covered in sweat, wiped my face and got a handfull of blood with chunks of skin. The .300 WinMag kicked just a little and now Imm rethinking those scope covers! Found a chunk of skin on the little lever also! Ouch!!

I get this bull it will be 10000000% worth it! And when shooting at something like that worrtying about getting knocked is the furthest thing from my mind. Plus sitting down, bipods out and having to twist and turn made for a little bit of an awkward shot. Loose grip on the rifle to minimize shake because yessir I was shaking like a bear crapping razor blades!!0 -

I had just finished up a left hand conversion 03-A3 in .264WM for my buddy Rick. He came by with an old Bushnell for me to mount and bore sight. I told him it wasn't going to have enough eye relief, and I would make him a deal on a nice Redfield Widefield I had laying around. Wouldn't have it, the Bushnell would work fine.
Showed up the next day with a nasty crescent half moon cut in his left eyebrow, and asked "Still got that Redfield for sale?". [:D]

I?m used to bench shooting and not hanging onto the gun. Shooting off the bipods old habits of letting the gun float kicked in. I?ve owned and shot the .338RUM in a sporter rifle, I imagine the kick with that will be less with the Lapua if I get the rifle I want, a little heft but not tactical heavy. Looked at a Savage yesterday in a McMillon stock, heavy barrel with a break. Shop owner said the recoil on that is similar to a 30-06 off of bags.

My old hunting buddy has been "scoped" several times by his 7mm Rem mag. Just doesn't learn.
I got a little bonk a couple weeks back when I inadvertently released the stock on my 6.5 Grendel AR allowing the telescoping stock to collapse about 3".0 -
First time I shot a scoped rifle I was 10. It was my Uncle's Winchester 30-06. I still have the scar on the bridge of my nose. Uncles can be jackasses. 0 -
That flip up scope mount is what did me in, sumbeech tore a gash in my beak!! And no, that isn?t the forst time my nose has been buggered, in a previous life I used to partake in barroom parking lot activities that invovled knuckles [8D][B)] 0 -
Ok, the elk. I?m blaming this on bad ammo, I did everything right but the ammo failed to perform. Hit that bull in the shoulder at 600 yards, he is hurt, limping badly, occaisonaly falling and spending a lot of time laying down. We went after it, the ranch next door was very accomodating and as it turns out one of the ranch hands this morning shot a bull and that is what pushed them to my side. However the ranch hands bull is wounded also and get this, I was given a green light to take whichever of those wounded bulls I wanted and the ranchhand would go after the other one this evening. My bull is a decent bull, mature with a nice rack but his bull is a friggin monster!!
We sat and spotted the herd, saw both bulls, tried to get close and we did a couple times get to within 350 yards. Neither bull offered a clean shot, surrounded by cows and when they did present there was a wall of cows behind them, me and the rancher I was with both agreed to not shoot into the cows.
We pushed them a little bit and decided to wait untill morning. I spoke with the ranchhand who shot the other bull, told him I saw both bulls and while his has very visible blood on it?s shoulder it is not in as bad of shape as the one I shot and I would rather take mine since it is hurting the worst, even though his bull is a monster huge freak I would take the one I hit.
So in the morning at daybreak we will meet and see if they survived the night and go from there. I was going to leave out in the truck tomorrow, nice thing about being my own boss I put that on hold, I?m going to do everything I can do to get this bull and put him in the freezer.
And the ammo I used, Winchester Powermax Bonded 180G .300 Win Mag. Guess those bonded bullets don?t hold up to bone too well. And that gun won?t shoot 200+ grain bullets, 180 is the heaviest it will shoot accurately and that gun shoots these PowerMax bullets very well.0 -

According to Winchester the bullet was going 1684 fps at 600 yds that might be below the threshold of where it will perform.
