May I ask a question? I don't hunt but if I did I think I would want a rifle that was accurate enough, reliable enough, and light enough. Around here where it would be white tail at 200 yards or less the Remington model seven would be great. If I lived somewhere with bigger animals and longer ranges I might step up to a 700 in 7mm or .300 Magnum. I am wondering why one would choose a more complicated and I am guessing heavier rifle like pretty much any semi auto. I guess one could say that one might get a second shot on target if needed but how often does that happen? Often enough to off set the disadvantages discussed above?? My guess is the first shot is the most important and any speed the auto has over a good man with a good bolt gun would be minor. Again just asking a question. Browning does build a beautiful semi auto. Of course they build some pretty bolt guns as well. 😁😁

Unless you reload, I would avoid all the WSMs. They never gained popularity, although the 300 and 270 were the best sellers of the lot.
WW is known to stop providing ammo and brass for cartridges that dont sell or make a run every 5 years meaning no ammo and if you find it, expect to pay around $75 or more for a box.
The long established and popular 300 Win Mag will perform about the same and you can get ammo just about anywhere for half the price.

As difficult as this is to say, I agree with Ricci. It's the first shot, not the follow up's that matter.

My .30-.06 is a Single shot NEF Ultra Rifle. Nice optics, Harris bipod.

(Single shots train you to hold your shot, until you are sure.) IMHO.

.270 is a Savage 110 bolt, also with nice optics.

OK, having owned a few in the standard calibers with mine not being used extensively they all functioned fine, no issues. Although, I question your caliber choice and if being used for some serious hunting imo, they would be better choices.

I like the looks of the MKIi safari but probably would get the MKIII stalker and not have to worry about scratching or warping if it gets wet.
I am going to disagree with most and say the 300 wsm would be a great choice. I've got one in a model 70 and from the looks of sales figures don't think you will have any trouble getting ammo for the foreseeable future. I do have dies and bullets for it but the Federal Fusion worked so well I haven't done much load development. I also have a 270 wsm and would be more concerned about ammo availability for it but I have probably a lifetime supply. Why do I have both? Because I could and did and both have performed great. Bob

My BAR MkII in 338 WM was a awesome, accurate and reliable rifle in the hunting conditions we faced in Alaska.  It accounted for several moose and Caribou North of Kotzebue in the winter tundra.

    thanks everyone
300WSM is the caliber I have in bolt action rifles and have plenty of ammunition
I thought some quicker shots on groups of hogs might be nice
I agree the first is the most important shot but sometimes another or two on hogs especially would be nice
mostly would be used in deer stands

Get what you want.  Those BARs are well made but heavy.  I always wanted one in 338 until I picked one up.

when it comes to weight my AR10 actually weighs 1.5 lbs more then my BAR just put each on the scale

I have had a BAR in 7 mag for 32 years now and have taken several whitetail with it. It has never failed to cycle in any type of weather and the accuracy is amazing, right there with quality bolt guns. I never once thought it was too heavy to carry and the way it shoulders and fits me is perfect. I definitely have a fondness for this rifle, right there with my pre 64 70's my Remington 725's. You can't go wrong with one.

I’ve never owned a BAR hunting rifle. Are they the same basic design as the military BAR?

I went to local Academy Sports they had some ammo
    plenty of 300WSM
I don't know if it is just a local thing or not but I find more 300WSM than regular 300WIN ammo

I went to the local Bass pro today they only had 4 different loadings  about 5 boxes of 300 savage,2 boxes of 45-70 and 9 boxes of 300 WSM . They had 1 box of 338 Federal that came home with me.

I like the BAR in 270 Weatherby.  Difficult to find one though. I wish they made one in 257 Weatherby.. Had a 30-06 and a 7mm Mag. Did not care for them.  Nothing wrong with the rifle,  just do not care for the cartridges in this platform.  I probably would like the 300 Win Mag.

not as pretty as some of the others I was watching
but I won't mind scratching this one as much since it is already broke in and a little plainer
I wanted a using gun more than a safe queen anyhow
