Keep multiples out of the safe scattered around, behind doors, etc. Loaded ready to go? Ammo bands on each. 6/7 reloads.

Inexpensive guns with lethal capabilities kept out of the safe, due to space restrictions.

Ken, It is complicated, I will try not to be too long.
When I was a youngster Dad always made me use his 37 Win 12Ga when we were rabbit hunting with the beagles down in Virginia. Dad borrowed Grandpa's beautiful 20Ga sxs Stevens because he was afraid I would damage it. With the factory butt plate on, the 12ga will tear a youngster's shoulder off. I hated the damn thing and don't know how I killed as many bunnies as I did with all the flinching going on. When I was in AIT Platoon SGT. broke me of flinching habit and I was 2nd highest Expert in Co. with Garand.
A little later in life they would only let me shoot once at the NG Armory because they were afraid I would win all the Turkeys with the 37. God only knows how many whitetails went down from the 12ga and double "O,s" In the right gauge, right choke, right barrel length, right ammo you are ready for anything in the forest or field and competition, Google Arnold Reigger and the letter Winchester wrote to him on his 37.
In my 1940 Stogers Shooters Bible 28ga list for $8.45. A really nice one now with the 30" barrel will push $6,000.
The 37 points and balances beautiful, I think. Two weaknesses: It is hell on extractors if you don't take care of the gun and the 12ga kicks like a Army mule. Never drop one of the older ones with curved buttstock on floor hard. Will shear right thru plate and butt stock at toe. They will crack behind upper tang and next to receiver for a variety of reasons but I never considered this a problem. I call the receiver on the 37 the badge of honor. Bluing on the older ones long gone from heavy use and some of the older barrels still look like new. I have one that I case hardened and put gold lettering in it where the red use to be. I think Turnbull would be proud of it.
It was a cheap, built like a tank production gun that got the job done. The 37 more than any other I believe was the gun that the Farmer used to put meat on the table, keep the fox and hawk away and protect his property and family. It was Rural America!
When I look at these '37 Winchesters I see Dad and my roots in Rural America. Take a kid hunting or fishing and you will never have to visit him in prison.----------------Ray0 -
My first gun was / is a model 37 in 16 gauge . Still one of my favorites and will be the last to leave my hands . Birthday present from my grandfather .

Learned to shoot bunnies with a Stevens 94b 12 gauge. The black and blue shoulder was a badge of honor among my buddies. Now a days I still have 3 single shots. A BT99 that had the choke reworked by a gentleman by the name of Herb Orr. A BT100 with the factory thumbhole stock and a Remington 870 competition. So I guess I've had a single shot in one form or another my whole life. Bob 0 -

Ken, you are correct about this area. Everyone had at least one SS.My dad used to take me to shooting matches. He had an Ivor Johnson that apparently had the perfect choke (checked by dropping a dime down the barrel). Guys would grab their guns off the rack and leave when they saw us come in with that old IJ.Some years ago I put together a small collection of SS shotguns and purchased a 44 caliber Ivor Johnson. The seller thought it was a 410. It is my understanding that back in the early (?) days there was a 44-40 shot shell. It was meant to be a small game getter for "cowboys" who carried a 44-40 revolver. However, as we know, those short barreled, rifled revolvers do not produce an effective shot pattern...so Ivor Johnson (and possibly other companies) produced cheap SS guns for the 44-40 pistol shot shell.. I have fired mine using 44 Special shot shells.

A wide variety of 12ga. Pumps in the safe. From Win.1897 to Bennelli Super Nova, and a bunch in between. Fair collection of Riot Pumps. (High Standard so smooth, if you stand it upright it will cock.)
I like Shotguns. A lot of times when I go to collect a firearm from an FFL, I am looking for and usually leave with an obscure low $$ Shotgun I see in the rack.
