Merthiolate, for sure!!! I spent a lot of my youth painted with great swaths of both of them.

IIRC that was merthiolate. At any rate, without mercurochrome or merthiolate or hydrogen proxide I would have died of some deadly infection 50 years ago. 0 -
Pour Isopropyl alcohol all over it. Then rub salt in it.
I've heard that helps.

Not kidding ,I clean all wounds with 91% alcohol. The burn tells you it's working.

The mother of the kids around the corner when I was growing used to take a popsicle stick and split it a couple inches and put a part of a cotton ball in the split, dip it in something other that merthiolate and treat their sore throats. It wasn’t merthiolate as my knees were usually that red color. Don’t recall what it was, but some early 60’s chemical compound.
8 out of 9 of the neighbor kids are still alive and the mom must have been 90+ when she passed last year.
Makes you wonder how we survived...

On the Lewis and Clark expedition everybody who lived ended up with multiple STD's - multiple times during the trip...
Open sores or weeping areas or infected spots were treated with the application of pure liquid mercury directly - and prayer - and you were placed on a timeout regarding Congress of any type with female natives...
They happily spread these family of related illnesses and parasites and insect infestation across great swathes of north America from coast to coast amongst great numbers of tribes...

sorry to hear . amazing how a small cut or divot ? can hurt so much and stays in a state of re-injury for weeks
as a kid my mom used the red what ever on occasion depending on what was on hand , her three main items applied to us were peroxide , alcohol and a mystery tin of black drawing salve ? the can looked like it 50 years old when I was a kid and a small dab went a long way it was put on any thing that was cut burnt or festered it looked and smelled a bit like axle grease I think it was a sort of variation of what we call bag balm now
I am almost sure when she passed ( RIP mom ) that same can was still in her medicine cabinet ..0 -
That tin was most likely a tin of Watkins Black Salve . Good for man and beast . Mom had the same can of stuff . Most used on us was a regional preparation called Pinee livestock oil . A distillation of pine tree oil . Worked wonders but looked like 30 weight motor oil. There was a human form that was clear but we rarely bought it as we always kept the other on hand for the farm animals . Dad figured if it worked on hogs when you castrated them it was good enough for minor human cuts and scrapes .

My grandmother used turpentine on any of our cuts. And it burned too, not as bad as alcohol. 0 -
We always got a rub down on our chests from a bottle of camphorated oil that dad put on the woodstove to warm it up. Followed by an oral shot of paregoric diluted in water. Never forget the black licorice taste of that stuff! Over the counter narcotic I later learned. These remedies were used by my father for just about everything that ailed ya! He would also blow his cigarette smoke into your ear if you had an earache!
Mercurochrome was always in the medicine cabinet for cuts. Burns were treated mostly with just cold running water. Bee stings treated with mud from our creek bottom. Doctor visits didn't happen unless someone was just about at deaths door. But our old family doc did make house calls.0 -
Dad called it drawing salve, used it on my boils when I was a kid.
If you think that mercurichrome burns try that liquid bandage stuff LOL.
BUT I think Sciatica nerve pain is worse

Mecuricome on a rag on a long finger was the cure for sore throat, kids never spoke around Granny if the had a sore throat.Lamp oil and coal soot was a remedy for cuts. Many a black scar around in them days.Chawing baccker juice was the go to for a bee sting.Working on a house on the golf course years ago, lady came up and asked if any one had any baccker. She said she been bee stung between the first and second

as above I remember the cigarette smoke suppose to help a ear ache also my mom told me as a little girl her mom putting warm "Pee " in there ear as home remedy for ear aches . dad wold dunk his cut fingers in gas to help it , both parents told me they were given kerosene ( coal-oil ? ) to drink when kids to help when sick
my dad suggested since I got poison ivy bad every year follow what he did as a kid his dad had him eat a small piece of a leaf every day working him self up to a large leaf .. I passed on the one even a s kid I seen no good coming from eating it .
I truly think the cure was worse then the issue in a lot of cases

Paregoric was a God send. The wife's Dr. gave her a prescription for it when she had our first child. He told her to give it to my son when "we " needed some sleep. 0 -
Honest to god guys, if you have a spot healing slowly, put regular old Chapstick on it and a bandaid. It works wonders! Try it. 0 -
My dermatologist has me putting vasoline on all my treatment wounds and covered with a bandaid. Suppose Chapstick is about the same but more expensive. 0 -

I used to try to never get hurt, just so I wouldn't have to have merthiolate put on my wound.0
