Remington 700 VS, or Sendero in 308.

Even the cheaper ones shoot pretty good these days I have a Thompson Center Venture 308 that I picked up a bass pro on sale for less then 400.00 that will shoot less then 1" with Federal Fusion loads

    Savage 110 with accutrigger

Browning A bolt(not x bolt, too sloppy for my liking), 7mm-08. Savage with accutrigger. There are several really good out of the box guns for less than 1,200 now days, well before the current crazy prices anyways.

All of my CZs have been accurate out of the box, and with handloads they are all capable of one ragged hole.

Gave my grandson a Mossberg Patriot in .308 and he shoots it better than anything I have. I think its him or me and not the gun? I guess my cheapest best shooting rifle is a Marlin 25 in .22 MAG . For longer range I guess my best shooter is a Model 70 in .308

Savage bolt guns, even down to an Axis II I picked up from LF a few years ago, have hands down taken accuracy up a notch. Passed my high dollar Remington, Weatherby, and Rugers. Even one upped a 5k custom 7mm STW with this 345 yard group, 3 shot challenge

Two of the best bargains in my opinion are the Weatherby Vanguard and the Howa 1500. These are basically one and the same as Howa makes the Vanguard for Weatherby. I have shot probably 15 of these and all have been winners. You didn't state caliber or what the end use will be so that's the best info I can give you. Bob

is there a consensus on caliber? I would prefer something 6mm or under. I have accurate hunting rifles but they have a short lifespan (about 1200 rounds) Im looking for a range gun thats capable of dime sized groups and a long life.

Savage with accu trigger. Mine shoots minute of dime, but it is a .17 so maybe a tad smaller than you are looking for.

Not sure to caliber under 6 mm but my first choice would be a howa /Weatherby in 308 . If it had to be smaller then the .243

I’ll second the weatherby vanguard II in .257 weatherby.

flattest shooting, hardest hitting caliber by far.

Ruger Precision 6.5 creedmoor or if you have to have something 6mm or smaller build a AR platform rifle.

If we are talking the most bang for the least buck it is Savage all the way. I'm a fairly decent rifle shot but I will never, ever win a bench rest event, not even a very small event.

My 243 Savage, with all the Accu's on it, shooting my Barnes 85 grain bullet pet load, will shoot clover leaf groups. All day long. Twice on Sunday. No other rifle I own will even come close to my Savage.

I have a Steyr ProHunter and a Tikka that I am pretty impressed with but I have an old ugly wood stocked Savage 110E that I paid $125 NIB for and a Simmons 44Mag scope that will out shoot anything else I own.My son has a newer savage with the accutrigger and its very accurate also.

Savage 110 with accutrigger in .243. Have two; back when my eyes were younger they both shot MOA.

Another vote for the Savage guns with Accu trigger. Just dialed two in Sunday and they both perform excellent. One in 17 HMR, and the other in 17 Mach 2

I've determined that about time you think you know which one and caliber is most accurate you will get a surprise. Never know until it's placed in the sandbags.

Seen a NEW out of the box 7mm08 that was really bad. My smooth barrel shotgun with slugs would shoot a smaller group.

Years back, some guys here were claiming the Steyr sbs was incredibly accurate. So I got one, 7 km rem mag, and they were right. Right now, it would come close to your $1200 ceiling. The one thing I would note is its also big. 26" barrel the stock is big, it's just big.

And yet another vote for the Savage with accutrigger.

Savage learned how to make a super accurate bolt action rifle years ago, and they still do.

Yep, and a LOT of people love Remington core lokt ammo, I HATE them. Had the worst accuracy out of corelokt than any ammo ever. Could have been a bad batch, but it swore me off em forever.

If you want a caliber less than 6mm there are many .22 caliber centerfire cartridges. How fast do you want to go?

Even though I voted for the weatherby / Howa in an earlier comment ,truth be told my most accurate rifle is an old savage 110e . I paid $60.00 for it on a yard sale . Had to do a total redo as it looked like it had been used as. A tent stake . After several weeks worth of draw filing ,sanding and polish work I had a decent looking rifle . Day in ,day out ,regardless of type or brand of ammo it turns in regular 1 inch to 1&1/2 inch groups . Boringly predictable. Some of my better hand loads will do 1/2 to 3/4 when I am up to it . Simply put the gun shoots better than I do .

I will agree the Steyr is very accurate.

I was thinking 222 rem or 223 rem.

Savage in .220 Swift. Meets price, weight, caliber- and shoots about like a freaking laser.

I must be one of the amazingly few people that don't care if I ever get another Savage bolt action. Had a 110 varmint in 243 that no matter what I did would do no better than 2" 100 yard groups. When I was selling guns the Savage brand was one of the more frequent return for warranty brands we sold. Granted I have been retired for 10 years and things may have changed but they just aren't for me.

Sorry, I didn't mean to derail the original posters question with what I am sure is an unpopular opinion but my Savage experiences kind of disappointed me. Bob

Have a 7MM Weatherby Magnum Mark V with German Scope. My old boss bought in Greenland. A "P" number made in Germany. A little gaudy for me, Real tack driver but who the heck can afford to shoot it.

Favorite, Another tack driver, tweaked a little, Pre-64 Model 70 FW in 30-06 made in '61. Has a Redfield 1 3/4 - 5 with TV lens and one piece Redfield Mount and rings. Been filling up the freezer with this one since then. Cheap and fun to shoot. Been with me in the bush since '61. Would not think of deer hunting without it.---------------------Ray

Have a Tikka T3 in .223 that shoots inch groups at 200 yds. consistently.
