Good for you, Randy. Sounds like a unique opportunity.

How about a discussion about hardening our infrastructure against EMP attacks?

Here might be a good discussion. Consider what kind of engineer God would be, that is if he were an engineer.

    1--electrical?

    2---mechanical?

    3---hydraulic?

    4---civil?

Discuss the differences between "theoretical" & "practical" engineers.

Stupid people are more of an impediment to engineering than a marvel.

That may be but what does that have to do with this conversation? Don

If you have an hour, no problem. I once read the when Woodrow Wilson was president, he showed up at the dedication of a building at an University (if I recall correctly). When it was know that the president was there, they tried to find room on the program for him to speak.

He was asked if he could make a five minute speech. He declined, explaining that he'd need a month to prepare a five minute speech.

He was asked how much time it would take to prepare a fifteen minute speech. He said that he would need two weeks to prepare a fifteen minute speech.

He said that he could prepare a 30 minute speech in one week.

When asked how much preparation would he need to prepare a one hour speech, he replied, "I can do that right now".

That is why I said that, if you have an hour to speak, you should have no problem.

What discipline and level us the class?

It's a senior seminar in mechanical engineering.

Most students have had more than enough teaching at that level. Also, instructors are just that, instructors. If you work in the field, talk about that. All the book learning and how toing doesn't prepare students for what it's like to work in the field/real world.

Had to do a similar presentation. Used the theme of "Unintended consequences" AKA "didn't see THAT coming, didja?" Use multiple short failure studies- collapse of the KC Convention Center due to rainfall. Collapse of interstate bridge due to repaving roadway surface (blocked storm drain, salty water ran down thru bridge joints, corroded steel) Designing aircraft escape hatch- was big enuff that ANYONE could fit thru it (as long as they were not wearing a parachute) Industrial accident, Bhopal India, killed too may people to count- triple redundant safety measures ALL out of service at same time. The little WHOOPS! at Chernobyl. How not to get rid of dead whale sitting on water saturated sand with one ton of dynamite (use the video- Lane County Oregon)

Use real life examples, but keep them short to keep interest.

I would leave enough time in your hour to take questions from your students. Addressing their concerns of interest (if you can) is always a good learning experience for everyone.

Be prepared, there will be some that can't keep their mouth shut and will think they know more than you.
