If I've only got 300 bucks it probably narrows it down to a cosmetically beat up Mossberg 500. Of course I'd probably have to borrow some more money for ammo so I'm glad you didn't include that in your criteria. Bob

12 gauge Pump ... My Wife is small and she can shoot the 870. Just load it down with light loads in Buckshot.

A joke I’m sure, but it brings up a good point. the Hi-point 9mm carbine might actually be a good choice for this scenario. With $300, you might even be able to get a few spare mags to go with it.

I would think a 12 ga pump of some flavor lot of older ones still around that served well for many years
but kidding aside I have heard the high point guns go bang when you pull the trigger . its not like your going to run hundreds of rounds thru it I would run a 1/2 dozen mags thru pick out a ammo that feeds well
I have had charter arms 38 sub nose's in the past I carried when younger ( no funds for a brand name version , well the only thing now I am older and no funds LOL ) but as a car / truck gun I trusted it , but same it was not going to fire countless rounds or a MOA accuracy
I would avoid the 25 auto and 380 low end jamomatics but still better than a rock

I agree with the pump shotgun route....just because it is so easy for all of them to use. If they insist on getting a handgun working the slide will be the only hiccup the wife and 14 year old might have, so you'd have to get a revolver to be sure there wouldn't be issues if they ever did find reason to use it. You can get a decent used 38 for $300.

Whoa there Ricci! Not so fast. As with most scenarios, there are many variables that MAY make a 20 ga. pump the right choice, but I can think of some good reasons to stay away from it.
Training is paramount. No matter your choice, the family will need to be well versed in the operation, loading and unloading of the firearm.
Ease of operation has to be considered too. Ever seen what happens when you "short stroke" a pump action? One spent hull hanging out of the ejection port and the next round halfway out of the magazine or laying on the elevator? Gawd awful mess to clear, and not impossible to do with the adrenalin flowing in a home invasion situation. Revolver, point and shoot, 6 times.
A shotgun barrel and forearm gives really good purchase for someone trying to wrestle YOUR weapon out of YOUR hands, in the event they can get that close to your son or wife. Revolver gives another 12-24 ins before they have their hands on your weapon. Time for 1 more shot? Advantage, revolver
Over penetration is always a concern, unless your domicile is a single family residence, preferably on acreage. I've never personally witnessed what happens when a .38 HP from a short barreled revolver encounters multiple layers of drywall and siding. I have, however, seen what happens with a load of #8 birdshot from a 20 ga. My older brother once thought it would be cool to aim at himself while standing in the hall and pointing his Ithica single shot at the bathroom mirror. You can probably guess, the gun was not unloaded. From a distance of about 20 ft, he punched out the mirror (of course), shot though both sides of the steel medicine cabinet behind it, through 2 layers of drywall and into the exterior wall another 10 ft beyond that. The shot column finally stopped after encountering the 3/4 in shiplap and 3/4 in cedar siding. It didn't fully exit the building, but did bulge the siding out a couple inches or so. I don't know, but I dont think a .38 slug would penetrate much more than that.

I have the XD-40 and XD-45 both great guns. It may be difficult to find one for $300 though. If you want a Charter Arms, make sure you have Mom and Son dry fire it. I have one in .40 S&W. It has a rather stiff and somewhat rough trigger pull. But it will shoot to minute of fat man.

After I get the gun, the first thing I'd do is upgrade the wife from average sized to slim/fit sized.
