I think that is a window wall inside the house, no outside windows, just to keep the smell contained! LOL

What part of the country are you in? By August in Texas tomatoes have been harvested and the plants wither in the heat.

I heard a chef say that tomatoes were not as good as they were years ago, even the ones he buys at farmer's markets. Why?? Are the seeds and plants altered??

there are many, many varieties to plant anymore. Peoples taste change over the years also.

I learned a few years ago when it comes to tomatoes by the time you buy the plants and everything needed I can buy them in a box cheaper from the people that grow them for a living. I usually can get a big box full for $10 or less and no way can I grow them for that.

There was a book written some time ago titled "The $80 Tomato". Describes my wife's effort to have "home grown" tomatoes.

there is a Amish run nursery north of us maybe 30 miles ( never been just a guess ) wife goes there to buy plants and flowers way cheaper than any local nursery .close by

Yesterday morning it was 28 outside tying the all-time record cold for that date. Today we got 2" of snow this morning and now it's just about all melted. We can't plant here until May 15th, Usually.

currently its snowing / sleeting out side temp down to low 30"s spring just has not goot a foot hold around here wife just started talking about a garden for now
wife use to start a lot of plants ( I even build a some what green house ) for a long time she would get the plants a jump start
about 5 years ago she started going to a Amish ( i think ) green house about 20 or so miles north of us and cheaper than any other place around us and no trouble of starting them off her self

Speaking of tomato's and gardens my girl even in her golden years near the end of her life she always had to have her tomato plants. No matter where we lived she would grow them on the porch, in an apartment or where ever she had a spot. Even when she was younger she always had her garden and it didn't matter if she was pregnant she would work in it up until the day she would have to go to the hospital to give birth. When I found her she lived back in the hills on a farm in East Tennessee when she was a little girl and that's the way she was raised, farming, hunting and fishing. Her family raised everything they ate except for sugar and salt.
My only big regret is not buying her a farm before we retired.
Here she was out in her garden back in July '85 not many days before I took her to the hospital to give birth.
In her right hand in the photo below she had a knife and a bag. Her belly was as big as a cow but she was still headed to the garden to cut some Okra. The next day after this photo she gave birth to our youngest son. You can't take the country out of a country girl and I would never have tried.
She was tough and an amazing woman that back in the earlier years became one of the first women if not the first to become a service manager for a large Ford dealership in the South. Mechanics working for a woman back then didn't go over very well at first but she straightened them out. She was a mild mannered woman but you did not want to cross her because I've seen her stick a gun up a mans nose and put him against the wall and dared him to move when he was about to hit me with a tire iron from behind as his brother, the owner of a tire company, and I were in a heated argument. Lucky for me she always carried a gun and that was back in the late 60s and 70s before we ever heard of gun permits.

My wife has chives & celantro planted outside in a planter. Just leaves them sit all winter here in Wisc. and they sprout back up every spring!

They did well. Sort of. I'm getting hundreds of tomatoes. The problem is they are about the size of a golf ball + or-.
I think I'll just run them through the juicer and make bloody Mary's.

They were supposed to be Rutgers. I believe the seed was no account.

well Rutgers are a smaller tomato, but those are smaller than average i'd say.

Our tomato plants have been a little slow. But our zucchini plants are giving us plenty.
