I DISAGREE when its stated that its no different than a satellite...........we do NOT have sovereign area in space, BUT we do have sovereign air space area ABOVE the USA.
I also disagree that we should just leave it alone! Kinda goes with the broken windows theory. Give em an inch, they will take a mile!
Let us fly a balloon over Beijing and see how THEY respond!
Doing nothing, with the excuse that there isnt any data to gather, makes the USA look weak and feckless!
What if it is a test run?! Since we did NOTHING, next time it may be a delivery system for a nuke!
Chinese government is a lot of things, but DUMB is NOT one of them! They have a reason for doing this, apparently multiple times since Biden took over!

Ohh my, a balloon conversation and now there is an uproar over "disagrees". WELL, anywho, China knows Biden is a gutless wonder for sure now that they had any doubt. Makes the USA look like it is, run by freaks and idiots.. "On my word as a Biden" I mauled Cornpop and I don't know anything about Hunter's business dealings.

as stated before, we HAD to know this thing was coming if it floated over canada that long they knew also, why not inform china as soon as it enter our airspace it is gone and at the first nonpopulated area bring it down, to me it doesn't matter if it is collecting data or not, what is to keep it from falling in a major populated area on its own?? Bring it down, check it out and send the pieces back to china.......

I did not say it's the same as a satellite. I said it could not gather any data that a satellite couldn't.
The real reason to not shoot it down is because the Chinese could then say, "You destroyed an intelligence-gathering craft in your airspace. We will now attack any intelligence craft we deem to be in our territory."
That might well include the next SIGINT aircraft or submarine to patrol anywhere in the South China Sea. And when they do, you can post "But, but, but..." all you want.

Balloons make excellent bio weapon delivery devices.
Shoot it down and the substance in the ballon is released.

One more thing...There is no evidence yet (at least that's been publicly released) that it is in fact an intelligence-gathering balloon. It might well be a long-duration weather balloon. Those are well known and numerous.

That is the choice of the person who selects the disagree icon and I have had quite a few on my own posts which is fine, we all have opinions but we are not always gonna have others agree with what we post, it's life and we have more to worry about than a smiley or sad face icon on a message board...

I guess I derailed the topic by mentioning the disagrees I got in my reply to the original post. That was not my intention and I am sorry I mentioned them. I was trying to stimulate conversation as to why they didn't agree. I really don't care about the number of disagrees I get but without explanations, it is difficult to have a conversation. Using the disagree button without explanation is the forum version of;

The official position is something like, "What's the point?" There's nothing that such a balloon can gather that satellites can't, and shooting it down would possibly endanger anyone below - both from the balloon itself and and from the shells/missile used to do so. More to the point, if we shoot down something in our airspace, that sets the precedent for China to do the same with possibly one of our recon aircraft. Remember, they claim almost all of the South China Sea and the Formosa Straits as their airspace. Do you want to trade an aircrew for a balloon?
You are making the same mistake as the gun grabbers. You follow the law because you are a law abiding person. Criminals (or Commie China) will not follow the law because they are criminals. If they had 1/2 a chance to shoot down a US spy plane, they would and not spend a nano second thinking if it was right or wrong.
Problem is they don't have anything that will do Mach 10.

I’ve been watching the news and listening to some reports on this balloon. I no longer believe it’s a weather balloon that went adrift anymore, but more of a test balloon disguised as a weather balloon.
If Ronald Reagan or Donald Trump would have been in office the balloon would have never left Montana. By not bring it down I feel we have just sealed Taiwans fate, and ours.

If it's trying to gather intelligence it will not fly around over the White House, Washington DC or Brandon's House. That area is safe.

I can think a quite a few reasons to not shoot it down.
Maybe we are learning from it, studying the encrypted signal it is sending.
Maybe we are hacking the signal.
Maybe China did it to prompt some kind of response out of us or expose some kind of vulnerability and we don't want to play that game
Maybe we already know what it is doing and knew in advance and is part of a bigger operation we have going and can't kill it without exposing something.

I say, Shoot it down! Dont LIE and say there would be debris from the ballon AND our missile! Its a BALLOON use a 30 cal bullet! SMH. There was ample opportunity to take it down over open land!!
Truth is.......our govt is AFRAID of China, and THAT is a scary thought to me!
