Trip to Hawaii
Everything is booked leaving 6/27 for two weeks
5 days in Honolulu and 9 days in Maui.
we are going to Pearl , the north shore and hiking diamond head
in Maui helicopter tour and driving the road to Hona. laying on the beach and playing at least one round of golf.
Any of you guys been and if so any sights we need to see while we are there?

On Maui in the little town of Kihei there's a BBQ restaurant called Fat Daddy's. Best BBQ beef and cornbread I've ever had.
Do NOT go to Little Beach while on Maui!

We went there VERY briefly and I can guarantee you there was nothin' little on that beach! Land whales left, right, and center.

Congeats! We are planning Trinadad and Tobago for Thanksgiving. Another foreign country Montanajoe has never been to.

Cool. That is a great part of the Caribbean to visit, we sent our son and DIL to St. Lucia for their Honeymoon a few years back

Not me but it would be a nice vacation .
but my youngest son and his wife went on their honeymoon for a week or two . Going to pearl was 1st on their list to visit

Eat local. Find little indie joints that serve ahi poke, musubi, and loco moco. There are several such joints on Maui within walking distance of the harbor.
If you have the time and money, book a fishing trip from Maui.
Also, check out the submarine ride at Maui. Glass portholes let you see amazing things (You'll be amazed that it isn't all in Technicolor, like you see on TV shows.)
You will probably hate Honolulu. The streets are festooned with homeless tents and "filth" between all the $1000/night hotels. The street signs are in English and Japanese, which ought to tell you about the majority of tourists. Do go tour Iolani Palace, though. It's stunning

I have 2 sons there. I've been there twice myself. Theyre in Haleiwa, Oahu. From what I'm told, it's very crowded anymore and traffic is awful. Even up on the north shore where they are. No one mentioned the Polynesian Culture Center. It's a popular attraction. Unless you're experienced, think seriously about swimming. My son tells me tourists drown daily. Some they never find. Three of my other children lived there off and on. One taught school there for a few years. They don't miss it as much as I thought they would.

I lived there for a little over 3 years....stationed on Sub Base Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. If you get away from the city on Oahu its a LOT better and you'll really feel the local relaxed vibes. The North Shore of Oahu is a surfer's dream....a lot of shops and places to visit over there. I wish I could remember the name of the road....it is near the Hard Rock Cafe....across a bridge and up the mountain. That road overlooks the city, but while driving up in the middle of the day it has so much vegitation and vines over the road that it seems like the middle of the night at times. Tom Sellek and Imelda Marcos had homes on that road. Its really pretty.
The Molokai mule ride to the lepper colony is something you will never forget if you can make time for it.
Roll your windows down while you drive around.....the perfume in the air while driving around is WONDERFUL.

I don't know about being buried there... I believe he is still MIA but my Grandma said his name is on a memorial there....

Thanks for the heads up. We are doing a sunset cruise on a sailboat one evening but we won’t leave the boat.
we also are going out on a catamaran to swim and snorkel. I think there is a big rock formation that you can climb up on and jump into the water, if we are brave enough.

I found the Historical Museum very interesting in downtown Honolulu in the 1970's. Good history of the islands.

Going to the top of Haleakela was fun. 10000 feet above sea level. From there, you can see a lot of....ocean.
Just take a warm jacket with you. The temperature at the top was about 45 degrees.

While on Maui you should do the snorkeling tour of Molekai(sp?). An absolutely amazing variety of sea life. Your chances of getting shark bit are truly very slim.

Sunset from Haleakela is spectacular - and COLD. It was near freezing when we were there, so cold that my camera batts died until I warmed them up -JUST in time- for the sunset. Standing on what is still a active volcano is though-provoking, for sure.
We were there on a Viking cruise that departs Honolulu and then visits five ports in seven days, back to Honolulu. It's a great cruise if anyone is interested. Maui, Big Island (two ports) and Kaui. Great shore excursions at each.
