Winchester barrel
I have a Winchester 94AE 44 Rem Mag 16” barrel and someone put a grinder to the front site and went thru the barrel. Is this repairable? Can it be replaced with a 20” since I can’t find a 16” replacement?

That is an easy fix for a gunsmith. Cut the barrel shorter, install a new front sight, and cut down the magazine tube the same amount as the barrel. Just do not take the barrel below 16” unless you have filed and received an approved ATF/NFA Form One for a Short Barrel Rifle.

The barrel is a 16” Trapper on the gun.

Sorry. I didn’t see that. You could still cut it to a SBR. Replace it with a 16” or a 20” barrel, or you could cut and thread the barrel, shorten the mag tube, and pin and weld a muzzle device like a suppressor mount, flash hider, or muzzle brake to bring the length to 16” again.

I have been thinking about getting it cut and adding a suppressor though i wish i could find a donor 16" barrel somewhere. I bought this gun this way. I can't imagine what someone was trying to accomplish. Do you have any idea?

The existing barrel could be salvaged. It would involve welding up the hole and over-boring beyond the damaged area. Another front sight could be fitted over the over-bore area. Discuss this with a gunsmith as to feasibility. No other mods would be needed in order to make it usable and legal. Interesting project…..

The front sight originally was pressed into a recessed slot, you can tap it with a hammer/punch to move it for impact accuracy. Evidentially someone welded or soldered the sight in place so it cannot be moved, so the hacksaw came out as an attempt to remove the sight and they hacked too deeply. The welding residue is evident…..from an amateur. This needs a gunsmith appraisal if the repairs can be done.

Easy fix. Take it to a gunsmith or machinist and have them put it on a surface grinder ( magnetic base vice ) and port the barrel where they went thru along with buffing out the grind marks that are there now. Blue the barrel when finished and install a side mount scope on the rifle.

Select-fire, that would be great but I hadn’t been able to find that gunsmith that will do anything or can🤷🏻♂️

What a complete destruction of a fine rifle. People don't realize “easy fixes” are not avaiable in my WIDE area. You would have to shorten the mag tube also and then be a SBR. That would take for a real gunsmith time and money. I would look longer to find another exact replacement and go to some firearm websites and spread the word that you are looking for one. of course it will be difficult to find but that would be my move.

That is my thoughts as of now and hopefully I can find one someday.
