257 Weatherby Mag 100 grain spire point ammo
Hard to find this ammo.
257 Weatherby Mag 100 grain spire point ammo.
Anyone with leads to purchase this ammo? This is the older style ammo Weatherby no longer manufactures.

I don't shoot Weatherby, so I may be telling you what you already know. I have had some luck searching out companies, usually one man or very small that load older out of production ammo. Some of those are no longer around apparently. Are there Weatherby owners groups or or forums?

Thank you. I have been searching several sites for this ammo with no luck. Great suggestion on reaching out to ammo loaders. The specific bullet I believe is made by Norma which are hard to locate in the Spire Point. I have looked at a Weatherby forum with no luck.

Believe it or not the Weatherby “Spire Point” bullets were Hornady Interlocks. The brass often was Norma and speculation was that Roy used some proprietary blend or maybe straight Norma MRP powder with Federal 215 Primers. The old Weatherby factory loads are HOT. He had an advantage because for nearly 40 years the only rifles out there were 9 lug Mark Vs. and he controlled the freebore too. I have a Model 700 Custom with a Hart Stainless barrel and one particular lot of .257 Whby 100 Gr Spire Point will blow the primer out and stick case in chamber. Same rifle shoots ELD-X factory rounds in little clover leafs with no signs of pressure. I love the .257 Whby but it is a smoker. As close to laser death as Man has yet to come.

WOW really great information. I will also pass this on to my buddy that is always in the hunt for the 100gr spire point. Indeed and agreed its a hot round as why we love it. we both have MarkV's and i have a vanguard as well and all of them are so accurate. The Weatherby 100 GR spire point has been so consistent in our rifles that we are just trying to stock up on this ammo when we can find some. The newer Weatherby Select interlock 100 grain is a little slower but kicks harder.

I am a big Roy Weatherby fan and put himin the same rare air as John Browning and Sam Colt. The “Quarter Roy” was by far his favorite. Mine too. I have a bunch of those, some in the old Yellow Boxes with a Lion picture. Will not ever sell them though. A perfect box is worth as much as 20 rounds these days. My best ever shot on game was a Pronghorn at 770 with a .240 Custom. Forsyth Montana and that Speed Goat is watching over me right now. SPEED KILLS!!!!

Given the prices quoted online wouldn't it be best to reload? $3.50 to $5 a round seems like a lot…..

If you want cheaper, yes. Faster? No chance. In the mid 90s I tried. We had a good Chronograph and I had a new 700 in 7MM Whby right after the Patent expired. Loading 140 Grain Sierras I could not get within 200 fps of the factory Spire Point loads without extreme pressure signs. I still have some once fired cases I loaded that the headstamp is flattened where you cannot read it and tool marks are visible from bolt face. The amount of case stretch was amazing. I even found out about and tried MRP. Just like the box says, “Nothing shoots flatter, hits harder or is more accurate.” I use the Barnes TTSX in the .257 now and it is an amazing game round. I considered blending some slow burning powders, 4831/4350 but thought better of it as they do not mix well and separate fast. I do not recommend anyone trying this or exceeding loading manual loads. As a note, I have some old Speer and Sierra manuals and the loads for IMR 4350 use heavier powder charges than they do now. The difference between loading in the 2700-2950 range and mid 3000s fps is remarkable.

I am curious about the barrel length of your rifle. Just checked my copy of COTW and the comments on that cartridge noted that it loses a great deal of velocity with barrels shorter than 26 inches.

Everyone, all great questions and comments on this topic. I have 3 Weatherby rifles in 257 all have a 24" barrel. For some reason the select ammo IL kicks harder than the spire point.

If there was ever a round that loved a longer barrel this was it. Shoot it at night sometime and see just why

l have a near new Remington 40X in 25-06 with all factory paperwork inc factory targets and load data from an auction right here on GB. Quarter bores most definitely thrive on LONGER barrels. My 40X has a factory Remington stainless 28'' barrel. l purchased some Factory Remington 100gr sp from a seller here. Need l say the gun/ammo combo produced some super FAST speeds checked by 2 chronographs at Jarrett Rifles in Jackson SC
