M1903 Springfield rear sight
I bought a USMC Springfield rifle from gunbroker and it has a weird thing with the rear sight that so far not a single person ive asked can explain. This rifle has many USMC features on it including a early USMC barrel, Hatcher hole, and stenciled matching bolt. The one weird thing on it is that the rear battle sight has been completley filed down to nothing. Just a flat surface. I can see where it seems to have been filed long ago. As the patina matches, I just cant figure out why someone would have done such a thing. If anyone has any insight or ideas as to why this is it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Military rifles of that era had the fixed sights sighted at 300 yards to achieve a hit aimed at the center mass. It is possible the sight was filed down to a shorter sight-in distance, usually 100 yards. Maybe never finished filing the V notch. Good luck.

I had a K98 Mauser that the rear sights lowest setting would shoot too high. It was set for 500 yards, so I filed the base down under the sight and got it low enough to hit a pie plate at 100 yards. I assume the same thing is happening with your sight, it just shoots too high. I haven't checked anywhere but you could search for a replacement, or even file a small notch, good luck on fixing it.
