Today I saw my first hawk kill. In all my 78 years of being an outdoor/wildlife person I never saw until today
a hawk make a kill. I have seen some misses before but today, as I was standing at my kitchen window a Red Shouldered Hawk(?) nailed a robin, flew up in a tree close to the window and proceeded to eat the robin.
Feathers rained all over the yard!!
If you are on the losing side nature is a little brutal!!

Years ago, squirrel hunting, an owl got a field mouse twenty feet in front of me. Then flew up to an overhead branch and proceeded to eat. You don't get to see that very often.

Had a hawk catch a squirrel couple of weeks ago in my backyard . Was a struggle to fly with him but he managed to get in the air .. I have seen an eagle hit a fish on the top of the water and take off with him . Amazing animals

One year, while deer hunting, I saw something a 100 yards or so away out in the field.
I had just put my binocs on it and noticed it was a rabbit.
Just as I had focused in on it, I saw a blur and a hawk had swooped in on it and nailed it.1 -
I have always been amazed at how ospreys can spot and catch a fish. I do a lot of lake fishing and see them do it quite often.

From a different prospective: thirty years ago I too, saw a ‘hawk kill’. I was driving across Kansas headed for a hunt in Colorado when from some distance out, here comes a rooster pheasant pumping wings for all he's worth. Not far behind is a hawk of some sort and it's gaining ground. On the road coming from the west was a semi truck with a double deck livestock trailer. The rooster made a quick dive across in front of the truck and the following hawk didn't make it. HAH HAH. A cloud of feathers and the hawk carcass cartwheeled well past the right of way.
I chuckled for several minutes. Sometimes the bug wins.

I saw many raptor kills driving the big rig. Travelling I-10 through Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, I often noticed hawks perched on a telephone pole, or else a tree adjacent to the road. There is a nice little meadow adjacent to the road, it is 20 to 40 feet wide and 600 miles long. Rabbits and groundhogs like to come out and get some fresh grass for lunch, and the hawks nail them.
