There was a TERRIBLE racket in the house...

Woke me up last night. High freqency ear-piercing sound that's hard to tell where it's coming from. Thought it was the smoke detector at first. Space aliens, even.

It was an August bug. Didn't realize how loud they are when you're in the same house with them.

If you need unexpected thrills, install a pet door so the cat can bring in surprises...

    Cant see the photo, but likely a dog day cicada. They are common in late summer.

    We had the 17 year cicada swarm here in the DC area 3 years ago. There were millions of them. Dogs were getting sick from eating so many. They are totally harmless. They are also incredibely stupid. They just sit there, you can walk up to them and catch them, eat them, smash them, etc and they will do nothing.

    This year we only had a few.

    They take 17 years to gestate underground. Then live like 2 months. They are totally useless!

    Cicada, 7 Year Locust, what we call them around these parts. In some areas they are so many you can smell them. The noise is deafening for about a week. Then they are mostly gone. You find their little shells where they molt and sprout wings before mating and dying.
    Usually 2-3 inches long. They don't seem to bother anything that I have noticed. But in high concentrations they sound like large machinery at work.
