Acid Reflux
Any one else get it??? I'm on the generic Prevacid and usually take it when I think I might need it. Lately I've been taking it every day about 5:00 in the morning. It is supposed to work for 24 hours. Last night my wife and I went out for a steak sandwich at a bar we frequent. Not for the drinking part but more for the food part. They have the best steak sandwich we've ever had. Smothered in cheese, mushrooms and onions.
Well to make a long story short I gobbled that sucker down, along with a couple of beers. We were home by 6 PM. At about 9 PM I had a slight hunger pang so I finished off what was left of a bag of Fritos.
At about 3:00 AM I awoke coughing and gagging like no tomorrow the insides of my stomach backing up into my throat. Didn't have any Tums or Pepto to take. Had a few slices of bread and had to sit up for a couple of hours. All I could taste was Frito acid.[:D][:D]
Got back up at about 9:00 and took my morning regimen of pills including the generic Prevacid. Its noon here now and I can still taste last night.

If any of you suffer from this, please be aware of how easily this can turn into something serious.
I had no idea that I had this, I just knew that every now and then certain foods like chicken or doughy breads would get caught part way down my esophagus. It was an inconvenience but that was it. Well, Thursday at lunch, I ate a french fry that hurt when I swallowed it. I finished my lunch, and didn't think anything else about it. What I didn't know, was that the french fry had cut my esophagus and I was bleeding into my stomach. As I was driving home, I started getting cold, but was sweating and I started to feel nauseated. It got so bad that I had to pull over because I got really weak. I started vomiting blood, and could not stop. My stomach was full of blood from this going on all day. I felt a little better so I drove a couple of blocks to a friends house. It was not very long before I passed out from the loss of blood. I spent the night in the hospital and had my esophagus cauterized to stop the bleeding.
Anyway, for those of you that have suffered with this, the Doc says that I could have gone in and had them stretch the esophagus once every 3-5 years. I had no idea the danger possible, so I thought I would pass it on to everyone else.

Anyone have a severe case? I've had some pretty bad episodes. Waking up in the middle of the night with pretty bad heartburn. Tums is my middle name.
I had a huge salad yesterday with green and red bell peppers, olives, etc. Came with this Vinegrette dressing. Got the food-carry out, and had a beer with dinner. As soon as I finshed eating my stomach felt like it was going to rip itself out of my chest. Right in the middle of my sternum. It was a pain as intese and extreme as I have ever had. It took a 1/2 bottle of Pepto Bismol to calm it down. We didn't have any so my wife ran to the store, I was left hovering over the toilet thinking I was about to puke for about 30min.
Anyone else ever have an attack that bad?0 -
It can cause cancer in that area. I got reflux so i do all that i know to reduce it's effects. 0 -
I have esophogeal (sp?) reflux disease...among many other things. I am very glad to hear you are OK and that this all worked out for you. 0 -
I have it. I got to spend a night in surgery as I choked and got food caught. I could breath but that was it. They stretched me out 8 years ago and other than having a small problem once in awhile it is much better. Quiting the high stress job I had made a big difference. The Dr's told me I would be on prescription acid reducers for the rest of my life. They caused more problems than they helped and never filled another prescription after the first. I do take Tagament once in awhile. I thought my case was bad but you are much worse off. Hope you feel better soon. 0 -

GERD sufferer for almost 15 years; it never goes away.
800mg Tagamet or Prevacid are the only things that work for me when I screw up and actually try to eat food I like.
Oatmeal in the mornings is out, as is that big ol' glass of O.J., bacon is not my friend anymore, had to quit smoking so that I can taste less blood when I burp, yeah, it's great.
Spoke with a microbiologist about getting rid of the H.Pylori bacteria associated with reflux/GERD; turns out if you kill the bugs that cause the inflammation and associated ulceration from excess acid production-you can't process food anymore.0 -
I take meds for it. It's not as bad as it used to be. Used to make me double over in pain. I haven't taken a pill for a little while now, still get minor cases, guess I need to start the meds again. 0 -
I have been taking Nexium 40mg on, and off for close to 2 years now, after having an EGD done. 0 -
I take Acifex every morning. It works like nothing else I have taken
(just finished a big bowl of venison chili). The only thing is that it is VERY expen$ive! My insurance won't cover most of the cost, so I am going to talk to my Dr. to see if there is something a little less expensive that we can try.0 -

Try OTC Prilosec,.......it is very close to Nexium that I take.
Nexium is very expensive also, but my insurance only charges $7.00 per scrip,......generic, or the most expensive name brand.
Have to get some of my money back!0 -
I was diagnosed with GERD about 5 years ago. The doctor said to stop eating tomatoes, chocolate, carbonated drinks (soda) caffeine (coffee), onions, garlic, and spicey foods. He said once you're feeling better, to eat these things in moderation. I feel pretty good if I abide by his suggestions without taking medication. If i'm planning on eating a big meal, i'll take a Zantac. Chocolate bothers me the most out of anything i eat, especially dark chocolate! 0 -
Nexium first thing in the am and another one before bed.
GERD with Barret's desease was discovered after a trip to the ER
with a major bleed.I thought I was buying the farm on that one.
The bleed was caused by aspirin and other painkillers taken daily for herniated disks.
Certain foods cause relaxation of the esophageal sphincter, the valve between esophagus and stomach, like caffeine, chocolate, some spices, alcohol, peppermint and some other good stuff.
If you ignore it, the Barretts transforms into esophageal cancer which isn't a good thing.
Periodic endoscopy checks out throat and upper G.I. condition.0 -
I have had GERD and acid reflux but Prylosec keeps it in check. I'm supposed to take 40 mgs. a day but I get by on 20 if I don't drink soda and limit my coffee to about a pot spread out over the course of the day. I can handle a limited amount of chocolate but I lay off that to try to eat more nutritiously. Soda is the real killer for me. Just two or three in a day and I'm hurting for a couple days. 0 -
I'm 46 yo, and i can eat rusted nails, and gargle razor-blades, with little to no effect.
Is the GERD problem heredetary, age related,a "cought" disease, or all of the above? I'm sorry for y'all that have it. Sounds like a major life/diet changing ordeal... Well, at least y'all have a good excuse NOT to eat the FRUIT-CAKE this year!![^]
Hope You guys can find some relief. MERRY CHRISTMAS....0 -
I don't have heartburn very often. If I eat no later than a couple of hours before bedtime, I don't usually have any problems. That is what has made this take me by surprise.
