...is this the same reasoning that you use to justify the costly REGULATION of the Gov't's involvement in the auto industry.?.?

...and they are 100,000% more complicated, with that many more add ons just to make them as efficient as last years model. Take a look at Cummins for example. Their new engine is larger and a LOT less efficient...all to accomplish the same job as the smaller, more fuel efficient model of last year...You know why???...b/c of Gov't regulation They had to increase the engine size just to maintain their existing performance and meet new Gov't criteria.

Okay first it was about giving up power...NOW you're not saying it's not about giving up power but about how the engines are more complicated. Which is it? LOL

I agree, it's a lot harder to do much work on my 2001 F150 vs. my 1970 F100..and even the wheels are a pain in the butt. But advancements usually mean more technology and increased technology usually mean more complicated mechanisms. Today's M16A2 would befuddle a gunsmith from the 1800's used to working on a model 1861 Springfield...but which would you rather take into combat?

Sorry but I just can't agree with your premise that President Bush pushing for more fuel efficiency to combat our dependency on oil AND helping reduce emissions is a bad thing and means he also wants to grab our guns.

Disturbing news to say the least. I'll contact my senator right away

Finally, I have to point out: the subject line of this thread is just plain incorrect. Saying that "President Bush outlawed light bulbs" taken at face value is saying that ALL LIGHT BULBS are from here on our ILLEGAL. That's simply untrue.

    P. Bush signed a bill requiring manufacturers to manufacture a DIFFERENT KIND OF LIGHT BULB. That means that light bulbs are 'still' legal.

And I read the energy bill through every word...nothing in there that says you will go to jail for having the old kind of light bulbs.

This sort of hyperbole and exaggeration is the same sort of half-truth (not even "half" truth, really) that the gun-grabbers use when they refer to the rounds fired by an SKS as "cop killing bullets that can penetrate the bullet proof vests normally worn by our brave law enforcement officers" while omitting the WHOLE TRUTH which is that pretty much ANY and EVERY rifle round will penetrate the typical flexible vest.

If we/you/I are going to argue about/against something: at least be fair, honest and accurate about it. Jeeze...I can't stand arguments built on half-truths, omissions, exaggerations, hyperbole and other misrepresentations. Can you?

...just like half of your rebuttals to me tonight.?.?

I may have used one exaggeration (300 fold), but I'm not even sure that was an exaggeration. Your arguments have twisted just about everything said tonight.

I think it can all be summed up in the following C&P of a few posts from above. The point made was very clear...as was the spin and twisting you wanted to put on it...particularly if you read a few posts down from the the quote below...(hint, you'll have to go back up to the posts above to find those).

Oh shut up if you can't do any better than that. You Bush-bashers want to blame everything on the man. If he didn't sign the Kyoto Accord, then he's an "anti-environment" who didn't listen to good advice . If he signs this energy bill AT THE INSISTENCE OF A BUNCH OF WHINING ENVIRONMENTALISTS then he's "the decider". Admit it: for Bush-bashers like you, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

If your life revolves around lightbulbs, I'm betting you're about as bright as a blown lightbulb.

An entire class of lightbulb not being made anymore. By a single stroke of the pen. I imagine those that bought one prior to the manufacturing ban will be "grandfathered". Joe

WHAT was "never stated to begin with" -? About the fuel efficiency bill means gun grabbing -? That was pretty much the association/logical deduction trail you took us on. You brought up the 2nd A. and then went on to say or at least strongly imply -as you are now- that the government meddling in automotive industry is akin to erosion of our 2nd A. rights.

ECC: You were the one who was pushing the issue that the Gov't needs to be involved in every aspect of our lives.

Simply untrue and you know it. That sort of misrepresentation is known in debate as 'Distorted Active Listening'.

Does the government have the 'right' and/or the obligation to regulate the light bulb industry? That's the question. If I say "yes" and you say "no", that doesn't mean that my "yes" means I want the government to meddle in every aspect of my life. It means that I don't consider that to be an issue worth fighting or that I even AGREE with the light bulb issue. I AGREE with the light bulb issue...at least at this point. I've asked for someone to provide me a good reason why the 'new and improved' light bulbs are not a better product. So far, the only person who has offered any reason has been you and your sole reasons are either that it means the government is meddling in your life and that you don't like change or something about the 2nd Amendment.

I think that really sums up your point of contention: you don't want change. What are you, like 89 years old or something? LOL

Okay Buddy: tell me where I used a "half truth, omissions, exaggerations, hyperbole or other misrepresentation" in "half of my rebuttals" -? LOL

Can anybody else other than my Buddy here -who basically says he's against any change that would make stuff different- offer a reason why the new light bulbs would be "bad" -? Besides the increase in cost which seems to be offset by the longer life (and light bulbs are cheap already, c'mon now).

I think it's a good thread, good argument. To me, it's interesting to see how people's minds works when they simply don't like someone and see anything he does as automatically bad...no matter what it's about.

I despised Bill Clinton but I'll credit where it's due on the things he did of which I approved. I think Bush-bashers as a group would hate him if he started selling money at half price.

And here's where you are wrong, again, in your assumptions. I happen to have voted for Bush twice. I'm beginning to think that may have been a mistake...albeit we had no viable alternative. I do honestly believe Bush is a good man, of good character...but this country has fallen further in the last 7 years than the past 50...unfortunately, the stage for this was probably set before Bush ever contemplated running for President.

Personally I don't like it when someone makes my choices for me. (I know the old bulbs are not illegal but if you can't find them you don't have many options)
As to the fuel milage mentioned a friend bought a 2007 dodge ram 4x4 flex fuel truck that gets 13 mpg highway with regular and 10 mpg highway with e85. My 2001 dodge ram 4x4 gets 17 mpg highway(and it has 230,000 miles). How are these new vehicles fuel efficent if older ones get better milage? As to car milage my 85 mercedes 380 se V8 gas gvw 4800lbs gets 21mpg average and my 73 mercedes 220d diesel gvw 4500lbs (480,000 miles[^]) gets 33mpg average. The technology required to make a more efficent vehicle has been around for decades (DIESEL)it should not need a gov't mandate. But as I said you should be able to make your own choice.

quote:How are these new vehicles fuel efficent if older ones get better milage?

For starters, the comparison of "old" vs. "new" when it comes to cars refers to cars made in America before the gas crunch of the 70's. Comparing "high performance trucks" (and most 4X4's made today probably fall into that category) from the last 5 - 10 years to one another isn't really a valid comparison. Plus, we'd have to see the cab configuration, gvw, and other options/features. When it comes to trucks, there are many trucks available today that are larger and heavier than what was available back in the 70's.

If passenger cars with similar sized engines and passenger compartments are compared, the cars today are getting much better gas mileage -and generally lasting longer as far as mileage- than their counterparts of the 70's. Again, we're talking AMERICAN MADE cars.

When you discuss your Mercedes you actually reinforce my point: other countries have been 'smart enough' to make cars that were both fuel efficient and still performed. American auto makers were slow to catch up and I place a lot of that squarely on the UAW.

quote:Personally I don't like it when someone makes my choices for me.

Nobody does but honestly, sometimes it really is for the better. For example, if the decision to make (or not) all new cars run on unleaded had been left to consumers, I think 90% of consumers would have said "NO!". I remember my dad and all his friends making the same sort of prediction as someone else here; that the required changes would drive the price of cars through the roof and the cars wouldn't last as long...in reality, exactly the opposite happened.

Question everything, don't take anybody's word...but just because someone else said it doesn't automatically mean it's wrong, evil or a diabolical scheme.

And I agree with you about diesel.

Heating a chicken coop with a light bulb is a really inefficient way to heat it. At least go with a ceramic infrared heater.

Um...are you saying the poor are using light bulbs to heat their homes now?

You know, if the bulbs last longer, then the poor will only have to purchase them less often. Besides, bulbs are so cheap now that even if they go up in price 5X-6X, I don't think anyone is going to go bankrupt buying replacement bulbs. After all...the "poor" probably don't have that many rooms to light up anyway, right?

It's sarcasm. The new bulbs don't put out much heat.

I don't have any of them for one reason,........the mercury content.
I heard a story that I assume was true, about a family that had one blow up, or someone broke it, in a childs room.
Story said it cost the folks something in the area of 2K, IIRC, to have a "specialty" contractor do a total cleanup to make the room totally safe for the small child to be in.
Maybe it was BS, but I heard it, and read about it through a few sources.

To a degree; but anything can be taken to an extreme. Years ago DDT was common in pesticides- and it decimated the population of our national bird, the Great Bald Eagle. It was also finding its way into OUR own bodies, too. People who complained about that complained that without DDT we'd have no effective controls against insect pests. That's proven to be untrue and meanwhile, there's less toxins going into the environment.

Corn farmers are wanting to plant more and more corn to meet the coming ethanol demand...yet nitrogen runoff from corn farming is killing the ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico.

Drug addicts say "It's my body and if I want to CHOOSE to put drugs into my body I should be allowed to do so!"...but we know that drug addiction leads to crime and disease (HIV, Hepatitis).

There are no easy answers but always saying "I should have a choice" isn't always the answer when something can be proven to be bad for the nation whereas something else can be much better.

As for the price of stuff...if the lightbulbs cost more but last longer then the cost really hasn't gone up, then has it? Besides, if you're that bad off over the price of lightbulbs...
