    Woodchuck furnace, can switch damper and run heat pump. About 3 cords of oak and hickory a year. Really nice if power goes out in ice storm (6 days last year)

    I envy those of you who have hardwood available. Hickory, locust, osage orange (I knew it as "hedge"). No hardwood in Wyoming, so we burn pine or cottonwood in the fireplace, woodstove, cookstove, even outside for dutch ovens. Sucks.

    When the Boss and I were on the ranch in Montana until a few years ago, we split and stacked six to eight cords of pine every year. Made a mighty satisfying sight. Now we have a mix of wood, gas, and electricity and only stack 3 cords when we can. It's nice to know there's heat available if power and gas become scarce.

    I heat my shop with wood. There is no chimney or fireplace/stove arrangement in the house, and the landlord would frown on my doing any such modification to his property. The shop (garage, actually) is set up for wood burning and that works out well.

    The house has Central heat and air, but when it gets cold I fire up th old Buck Stove. (Nov to March)

    We designed the floor plan of this geodesic dome for wood stoves 27 years ago and have used the backup electric baseboard heat only rarely, mostly to keep the house from freezing when we were away. We've got a Vermont Castings Defiant and an old Monarch cook stove on the main floor and a fancy new Quadra-Fire in the basement, with a grate through the floor above it to let heat flow upstairs. Down to about 15-20 degrees the stove downstairs will heat the whole house.

    The wood comes from our own property--mostly (and preferably) oak, with some cherry. But we also burn any wood that has to be removed: soft maple and aspen damaged by wind, elm killed by disease, and tamaracks killed by bark beetles. About 5 1/2 cords a season, which is very good for western Wisconsin, my older neighbors tell me.
