Roller derby is going great guns here on the West Coast. It's a little different today as they race on a flat track instesd of a banked one with railings. The local gals are called the Ratcity Roller Girls. (and yes, they will kick your butt!) Feel free to check them out on the net.

Remember seeing it in the '50's when I was a kid. Just before (or just after, I don't remember) wrestling.

Buncha bull-dykes getting thrown over the railing, punching, tripping, etc. Drew the same crowd of old ladies that wrestling did.

Every Saturday, My grandma and I sat in front of the TV watching it religiously. She made popcorn for me. Joe

I used to watch the old L.A. Thunderbirds on TV every weekend and listen to announcer Dick Lane shout his famous "Woooo Nellie" whenever something exciting happened. After years of begging and badgering my father he finally took me to a live T-birds event and when I was there in person it was all so fake that I don't think I ever watched the T-Birds again [V].

Never saw it live but a neighbor lady watched it all the time. Reminds me of NASCAR on skates. I do like Jim Croce's song Roller Derby Queen. Spike

Well givette is right about most of them being butch/bull or whatever dykes. Nasty bunch of gals. Around here all the women went to Monday night 'raslin' and the guys went to roller derby. I can tell you from first hand that there ain't nothing "fake" about the bumps, bruses and broken bones I've seen. The durby gals around here are for real...and so is the blood!

I really liked the roller derby shows on tv when I was a kid. Maybe some the hits and the punches were over dramatized ("fake"), but Geez, these girls went flying and did hit the ground the folding chairs and what have you . How do you fake landing on your ass or ribs after flying 6 to 10 feet through the air. Any way you look at it, it had to hurt.
