    anything that's a pest to you (to some a grizzly might be considered a 'varmit'[:D]).

    There often is a fine line between "vermin", "varmint", and "predator" but around here "vermin" are mice, rats, "varmints" are woodchucks, feral domestic cats and dogs, 'coons, prairie dogs, and "predators" are fox and coyotes and bobcats. But #1, varmints and predators are intertwined depending on fur value and, in the case of the prairie dog, recreation (varmint) vs. pest quotient (vermin). #2 a classic "varmint rifle" (long range, flat shooting) is usually utilized on fox, coyotes, prairie dogs around here.
    In the case of feral domestic cats and dogs, anything is used
    after, of course, it's certain that they're feral or where they don't belong or are doing depredation.
    I .22 WMR can do stellar duty if used wisely.

    Anything traveling northward across boundaries without proper permits and/or permission and when ordering from KFC says, "Give me a bocket of shicken" instead of "Give me a bucket of chicken" is a Varmint.

    Rider;

    Know how some folks define the word "Indiscreet"?

    It's where they park their cars.....

    The gun Mike Whiskey has pictured in his signature is a perfect varmint gun. Everyone needs at least one of them.

    A varmint is a critter that belonged there before some human came along and decided the land and its use was all about him. In most areas ground hogs, coyotes, prairie dogs qualifiy, but be sure to check your Game and Fish or DNR regulations to be certain what is considered small game, fur bearer and so on before pulling the trigger. Usually there is no season or bag limits on varmints.

    Varmint populations need to be controlled because man by his presence with bulldozers, growth oriented mindset, etc., has warped/imbalanced the natural ecosystem and natural controls are gone. Too many varmints and you get negative human-animal contact, increased disease (rabies, mange, distemper) and too few of one or more prey species. It's not just because man decided land and it's use was all about him. The land displaced by each of our houses was at one time wandered over by varmints. Everybody's gotta live somewhere and we all gotta eat, make a livlihood.
