Two West St. Paul bank robberies Tuesday left authorities scratching their heads in disbelief.
A TCF Bank in the Robert Street Cub Foods was held up twice in less than five hours - and by two different robbers.
A man approached a bank teller about 9 a.m. and presented a demand note that implied the robber had a gun, said Kyle Loven, a supervisory special agent at the FBI's Minneapolis office.
After getting an undisclosed amount of cash from the teller, the robber left the grocery store and ran to a nearby wooded area behind the store.
West St. Paul police officers, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and a canine team searched the area but could not find the suspect, West St. Paul police Chief Bud Shaver said.
The suspect was described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old and about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a dark blue Detroit Tigers baseball cap, a black zip-up jacket with a white insignia, faded blue jeans and running shoes.
The robber was carrying a black zippered case, in which he put the cash, the FBI said. Authorities left the bank after the morning robbery, Shaver said, except for one lone West St. Paul police investigator who stuck around to gather more witness statements. The investigator, who was in plain clothes, left the bank about 1:50 p.m. to get more paperwork from his unmarked car.
That's when the second robber struck.
"I kid you not," Shaver said. "When he got back a
few minutes later, a bank employee said, 'We've just been robbed. Again.' "
The robber showed bank employees a black handgun tucked in his waistband, Shaver said.
The investigator actually saw the second suspect jog past him outside the store, Shaver said, but didn't think much of it at the time. The suspect also ran into the nearby woods with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Loven said FBI investigators had just arrived back at the office when they got word of the second robbery. "When we were told the same bank had been hit again, we were a little stumped," he said.
Loven, who has been with the FBI for 12 years, said he has never heard of the same bank being robbed twice in one day.

That reminds me of a movie I saw not too long ago (just don't recall the name).
I wonder if the banks logic was "let's open up since lightning don't strike twice". Then again what if it was the same crew one got there on time and the other got lost[:D].0 -
Was the robbers name Roberto?
