Sorry, I just ASS-U-ME-d everybody had heard about it. A Navy F-18, I'm guessing from Oceana, was returning from the practice range and dropped a ten pound smoke bomb in the center of Virginia Beach. The investigation is ongoing.

it is possible he had a hung bomb, during the
flight back, it loosened up and fell free.
I stopped by my cousin on the way home.
He could troubleshoot these problem in his
    sleep.
    inadvertant release is very uncommon.

IR not impossible. Especially if the system is still armed and all ordinance not expended.

We had an inadvertant release in the UK one time. They shacked a cow with a BDU-33! Strike footage showed the cow all lined up. Pilot forgot to turn Master Arm & Release switch off when they cleared Spadeadam range. WSO pickled playing around and bomb jettisoned as commanded.[:0] It cost the USAF 5000 quid for that damn cow!
