best "bargain" 1911
any suggestions for a low-priced 1911?

I would say the Springfield GI, for around 4-$500. Someone will be along shortly to give other options, RIA being one of them for sure[:D] 0 -

GRD is a big fan of the RIAs, and knows people at the distributor if you run into trouble.
My next will be an RIA, Combat Commander equivalant.

Take a look at the Auto Ordnance. Workmanship is NOT that of a Colt- but neither is the price. Decent shooters for the price. 0 -

I do know a few of the top guys with Armscor but have never met them face to face. I have talked with them on the phone and over the net.0 -
Type in "Sistema" over on the auction side. Always a few available. Made on Colt machinery, to Colt specs. Actually uses a Swedish steel formula, which is the best. Forged. Weighs slightly more than a Colt due to internal reinforcement/design. Will swap-out with all M1911 parts. For all that, it's less expensive. Best bang for the buck.
You will get an excellent firearm, and pay a reasonable price. That's where the "bargain" comes into play. Joe0 -

if you want a basic one by all means go with a RIA if you want one with a few bells and wistles I would go with the new Taurus 1911 ,I just bought a taurus with everything for $499 ,going this weekend to run a few hundred rounds through it 0 -

The RIA Tactical is still less than the Taurus and it also has the bells and whistles on it.
I am not knocking the Taurus as I have heard good things about it. But I do know the Rocks very well and they are a great gun at a bargin price.0 -
Rock Island has surprised me at just how well they are made and function for the money. Taurus's 1911 is another I would not be afraid to try. 0 -

Two different guns. The Ballester has a 1911-type slide, but the lower is more basic and lacks the grip safety. Still, I love the "Battlestar". It's quite a workhorse.
**addendum** If you're considering an Auto Ord, make sure it's post-Kahr. As much as I like my pre-Kahr, it's not as well-built as the new ones.0 -

if you can find a IAI-6000 it,s a good deal,comes all tricked out. i think i paid 499.00 several years ago and have had no trouble in over several thousand rounds. eastbank. 0 -

Define "low priced".
1911s have enjoyed a tremendous revival over the past 3-4 years.
Consequently pretty much EVERY manufacturer of note has one. (Curiously Smith and Wesson is selling them to the public. . .Colt isn't!).
In a market that competitive you more or less get what you pay for.
If you just want a "beater" to send rounds downrange, any of the above choices ought to work (Springfield, Taurus, RIA, etc).
You can probably find a Norinco .45 for under $400, though its not going to be a very high-quality gun.
I managed to scrounge up a slightly beaten chromed Colt series 70 about two years ago for under $600. It lacks all the nice bells and whistles, but it works and I figure its not going to depreciate much.0 -
+1 on the RIAs! And the Taurus PT1911 is nice too! kind of a toss up for me, but oh well.
GRD is right on with the RIAs, I have 4(3 GIs and 1 Compact) just aquired 2 more over the weekend. I really like them!
