God forbid someone who gets shot at all day should want to get paid for it, at least as much as the other guys who get shot all day and can quit when they like.

barking dog....you must have misunderstood. These bonuses are for the absolute elite of our Armed Forces. There is a very small gene pool from which these soldiers, sailors and airmen are drawn. They have already survived and excelled in some of the very toughest training on earth. After the completion of their initial tours(you can call that their low paid patriotic duty to their country tour) they are of course free to go back to the loving arms of their families AND to the wonderful job opportunities available to them in our free world economy. These are not some base level grunts or swabbies that may have seen a rifle a couple of times and actually fired it once in basic training. When you have already paid your dues...as so many on this board might not have done yet...you should feel free to maximize your income possibilities. I see nothing wrong with the military at least trying to keep up with the civilian market sector and paying these professionals what they are worth. Beach

Well, I guess that makes me a mercenary, since I received tax free combat pay on more than one occasion, and received several other bonuses during my 23 year career[:(!][:(!]

And even worse, I receive my disability retired pay every month!! I suppose that I should just shoot myself, as a mercenary waste of taxpayers' money [:(!][:(!][:(!]

Old Fool,.......he is saying it is OK for you to get your military disability, as long as you are in favor of welfare, and every other program, taking money out of your pocket.
If you're not,......then you should not be collecting yours.
This is what HE is saying, not ME!![;)]

I'm glad special forces are getting paid more and bigger bonuses.

Keeps them from getting head hunted by those idiots at Blackwater.

    BarkingDog,

Your wit is wasted in your roundabout defense of Blackwater.

This bonus to serving members of our armed services is just that - A BONUS. It is a reward for a job well done and an incentive to continue doing good work. They did not have to have six figures dangled in front of their faces to sign up, they did not have to be promised immuntiy from any prosecution to say okay - no one becomes a SEAL or Delta or Green Beret for the cash - they do it because they are professionals and they are patriots.

And I feel pity and occasionally loathing for people who confuse the fine men and women of our armed forces and the cash-checking mercenaries of Blackwater.

It's ammasing how far up the behind alot of you guys have your heads. Those that have been there know, 1. Who's got the equiptment?
2 Who feeds better? 3 Who pays better. (money IS what makes the world go around) 4 What are the odds of living through the army's time and BS compared to the civ. job.
If you don't or can't figure it out then your either very rich or will be poor all your life.

Hey BarkingDog - I got a $38,000 re-enlistment bonus when I re-upped. And all I did was work in the engine room on a submarine. During peace time no less! I didn't even get to shoot anybody!

I guess I should pay it back, huh?

no no no. a "bonus" is something that is paid for a job well done. a SALARY is something that is paid to KEEP doing the job. in order for the elite troops to get this "bonus" they have to enlist for 3-4 more years and KEEP doing their job. that isnt a bonus, its a salary. i think one might even call it...getting paid (profit) to do a job.
also, why does the military feel they have to pay these guys more or they will go work for private contracting firms ? according to you no "patriots" works for private contracting firms so why would the current "patriots" in the military be leaving the military to work in the private sector ?
both the military and the private sector know that these men are for hire. these men will work for who pays more.

    Uh no Barking...

A salary is paid for a job done...not to keep doing the job. You are not paid in advance for the work you MAY do next week. You are paid for the work you did last week.

A BONUS is paid for a job well done...exceeding goals/expectations...or as an incentive to keep a highly trained person in the job they are doing

And just to clarify, bonuses are usually not paid in FULL UP FRONT. I got my bonuses broken out over the number of years I reenlisted for...each year on my re-up date.

okay fine. in this case if the government didnt pay more the troops would go work for a private contractor. so you can call it a "bonus" a "salary" or whatever you want. it doesnt change the FACT that they are paid to do their job. just like private contractors.
i would think a true patriot would stay on their job and not just serve their country when the price is right. of course, i have no problem with military troops being paid. i also have no problem with private contractors being paid. i dont know why anyone would. unless of course you are EMM and you have emotional problems, lol.

So you're trying to insinuate that joining the army and joining a mercenary company are ethically equivalent, because they both get paid?

Man, I just... I don't... Jesus, is it even possible to encompass all the ways that's wrong? Building a house and killing a baby are the same, ethically, because you can use a hammer and a saw to do both! BarkingDog and Hillary Clinton are basically the same person, because they're bipedal organisms made out of carbon. They share the same species even! Damning evidence if I ever heard it.

Seriously, if you're not completely gibbering insane, what is your point here? You're obviously trying to make one, but you keep being cute about it so there's not a lot of ways I can read that that make sense.
