Savage 110 GXP--Long Range Newbie????
I am thinking of trying my hand at some longer range shooting. I'm a complete newbie to this realm of firearms and looking for some opinions. I will probably be sticking to shots well under 500 yards, mostly around 300 yards. With those facts in mind I have a couple questions.
First I am thinking of buying, as the name suggested, a Savage 110GXP in 30-06. Any thoughts on the model and the caliber?
Second, the one I am looking at has a Simmons 3-9x40 mounted. How is Simmons quality, and are the optics right for those ranges?

At 300 to 600, you should be in great shape.
Better glass if you want 1000 to 1200.
Also - depends on how accurate you want, and how accurately you shoot.

It's a little out of mine too. But it's on my wish list. I love long range shooting. There's nothing like the rush of hitting what your shoting at. Put it a few hundred yards down range and it adds to that rush. 0 -

The 110 GXP is a great rifle to start with and although the Simmons that is on the gun is not the best, it will serve you well ot at 300 to 500 Yards. The 30-06 is a great round to start with also, but you could also get away with a .308. Now the great thing is that package you have can grow with you. You can improve your rifle to match your improving skills, start off slow and you'll have a ton of fun. 0 -
Get the rifle but not with the package deal ... get a better scope that you can depend on for long range shooting and hunting. Good luck! 0 -
The Savage package is a great way to start.
If the rig will be a designated target rifle, go with the .308 as opposed to the 06.
If a combo target/hunting rifle for game larger than deer, stick with the 06.
The available match loads for the .308 will likely far outnumber those available in 06 (nearly every major ammo maker has at least a couple different match loads for the .308).
The .308 is considered by many to be inherently more accurate than the 06 and some major rifle makers offer their target/tactical models only in that chambering, so they must agree with that line of thinking.
The Simmons glass should serve you fine, although I'd want higher magnification for the ranges you specify.

From the responses I got here and on 'Ask the Experts' (before it got inexplicably locked over there) I have decided to go with the Savage 10GXP in .308.
I don't plan to be reloading anytime soon, so can someone point me to a good sight to get .308 ammo.

bhale187, I recommend that you start looking into handloading for the 308Win. if you want to really shoot accurately even out of a factory rifle. I'm not saying jump into it all at once, just start reading up on it and getting info and save your brass as you shoot it. The initial investment can hurt a little, but it will make up for it in the long run. The reason I say that is a box of 20rds Match grade ammo is almost impossible to find for under a $1 a round even in 308Win. It costs me about $0.40 to $0.50 a round to load a better than Match-Grade round( because it is tuned to my rifle). I personally use Berger 175gr VLD, Winchester LR primers, Winchester and BlackHills Match(which is made by Winchester) brass, and Varget powder. I am really impressed on how much of a difference it made in group size. Yes it takes time to find your PET load but in the end it is satisfying!
Here is a pic of the best 100yd group I have shot out of my bone stock Mod. 70 Stealth II. It is a 5-shot group and I quit after the 6th was a flyer. I was trying to see how many rounds I could keep under .5MOA as the barrel heated up. The 5-shot group measured .14" and .49" center to center with the flyer. These were handloads!
