Actually look at the ballistics of the 260 remington verses the the 308. It has more energy at 500 yards than the 308, and hits your shoulder like a 243. Shoots about as flat as a 270 to boot.

    Nononsense,

I apologize, as I should have qualified that statement with "available mass produced factory loads, and rifles". My mistake for having an oversight like that. Those 6.5's are darlings though.

The 6.5X284 is the premiere 1000 yard cartridge today. It currently holds the 1000 yard benchrest world record with a 3 inch group. Although it is a little hard on barrels you simply cannot beat the performance at long range. Here is a great article for you:

    J.L.K,

The term '6.5 x 284 Norma' is a cartridge designation not a caliber designation which is expressed simply as the basic diameter of the bullet or groove diameter of the barrel.

Other than that, the 6.5 x 284 is a superb cartridge, capable of extreme accuracy so long as the rifle system, loads and the shooter are up to the task. There is a good selection of bullets, powders and brass available to go along with a large supply of loading data that has been developed and tested for almost any need. There are several different rifling forms being used these days as opposed to the standard rifling so you have even more choices.

The 6.5 x 284 Norma cartridge is capable of providing better than average ballistics so long as you work with the best bullets (high BC) and longer than normal barrels to take advantage of the case capacity. Be aware though that the .308 Win. has a long and distinguished service record featuring exceptional accuracy at 1,000 yards when loaded properly and longer barrels are used. I will quibble with the statement regarding remaining energy in the comparison between the .308 Win. and the .260 Rem. since there are too many variables to allow such a blanket statement. Most of my data demonstrates otherwise.

Don't forget to look at some of the other 6.5 cartridges such as the .260 Rem., 6.5 Heaton (6.5 WSSM), 6.5-06, 6.5 x 55 Swede, 6.5 x 57, and the newest darling of the competition circuit, the 6.5 x 47 Lapua.

George is good builder with a consistently good reputation for attention to detail. He also competes and stays up with the new developments in this field.

Enjoy whatever you decide and let us know how it goes!

    Best.
