safe combination tips
i know some may have snickered at laughton2 for loosing his safe combination, but it can easily happen to any one, and if you have more than one, or one at work it is easy to get them scrambled
and if you where to pass away your loved ones may have a problem
1. hide the number in a fake phone number in your phone book
2. fake wall outlet, you can even add a fake wire added to a battery powered wall clock, again conceal the numbers in such away only you or a family member can find them, or just use hex decimals

Mine is in the safe deposit box. Just remember someone elses name has to be on the box as well. We put my mothers name on the box since are wills are in there as well. 0 -

I gave only one other person the combo to my gun safe, he then put it in his gun safe. He is instructed on what I want done with my guns if something was to happen to me. Also not worried about him with my guns for he already has a couple of mine in his safe already.[:D] 0 -
The one number you will never forget, and the one most criminals will never guess is the phone # (or a portion thereof) of the house you grew up in. 0 -
Another way is to have a name or word you wont forget and spell it out on a phone keypad. e.g. STUD is 7883. 0 -

In the top drawer of my filing cabinet in my home office is an envelope. Marked "Daddy's gone". Cover letter basically says I'm not around anymore- here is info that my widow or heirs will need. Combination to safe. Copy of will. Retirement and investment accounts. My SSAN, DOB, instructions for my funeral. Yeah, drawer is locked. Wife and two of the kids have a key. Gents- MOST of us have done a lousy job of prepping your spouse to be a widow. Have been a Survival Assistance Officer, and the lack of info by family members can be a real beach. If you own stock, have a 401K, investment account, let your family know. Safe deposit box? If you are dead, in most states, box will stay locked until executor of estate presents documents to bank. 0 -

I have had to clean up two different estates. One was my folks and the other was my MIL's. My folks had lived in the same small house for 50 years and had never thrown anything away, my MIL was prepared and it was a lot easier. I have tried to think of the things that would have helped me at the time and incorporated them into my plan. I have a spiral note book in my middle desk drawer that lists all insurance policies, bank accounts, location of titles, extra keys, location of tax information, wills and a list of what's in my bank box. I have put my kids names on all my accounts, box and car titles to be effective on my death. they are also co-renters on my bank box. My son is also a "gun nut", so he and I have exchanged safe combinations. I also have a recipe card filled out for every firearm I have noting serial #s, all identifying information and a general value.
I know I don't have it covered, but it may be of some help to my heirs.

Actually, I didn't lose the combination. As I posted, I had the combo and serial number in a password protected PC file. Both numbers were converted to hex.
The problem was, the combination didn't work. I explained in the original thread how Liberty got around the problem I don't know why the combo should change from its original numbers, but apparently they do or Liberty wouldn't know how to resolve the issue. The combo works everytime, like it should, now. I'm very happy with Liberty's customer assistance.
That said, this is a good thread. I need to put the combo into a telephone number on my Yahoo 'contacts' list. And, I need to prepare my estate a little better. Although, I don't think I'll list all financial account numbers and bank box contents where anyone can find them.
I have two brothers who are attorneys. I'll give them the combo to my safe and the bank box keys will be in there. They can get to the bank box and find out all my financial information.0 -

When my father passed last year, we had to have the company send the reset combo to the local dealer and they came out to open the safe. Royal pain in the azz. It took almost 2 weeks to get into the safe and the only thing in it besides the guns and ammo was a credit card that his wife wasn't supposed to know about! I tore the house, garage, den, and reloading room apart trying to find documents that weren't anywhere. Finally found the insurance papers mixed in a stack of magazines in the crapper. Never found alot of other essentials. Total freaking mess! His widow is still trying to sort some stuff out a year and a half later. If I had died and left everything in such a shambles, the old man would have put his foot up my azz.
After the funeral, I came home and put all my investment acct#s, insurance policies, phone numbers, guns & serial numbers, will, photos of all my belongings.....basically everything, onto a DVD. There is one copy in our safety deposit box, my mother has a copy in her's and my best friend has a copy. When I die there won't be any guess work![;)]0 -

don't be too sure of that, a Dr. in Phoenix got fired for photographing a sedated patients BallPark Frank that had "Hot Rod" tatoo'd on it [:D][:D]0
