Serious ? from a small arms shooter.
I am thinking of buying a larger gun, an SKS 7.62 made in china W/scope for 299.00. The only other large gun (non shotgun) that I have is a marlin 30-30 that I've had for maybe 20 yrs, Im looking for something with more range, what range can I expect to get and is this a reasonable buy.

You will not gain anything over the 30-30 with a 7.62X39. If anything you will take a slight loss in power. 0 -
Dave, The 7.62X39 is very similar to the 30-30 ballisticly, you will not see any improvement over your Marlin. Now if you would like to step out on range a bit more there are many great bolt action guns on the market that can really reach out there. From 243 to 308 you really can't go wrong. 0 -
Get a 30.06. One of the best "all round" rounds there is. 0 -
SKS rifle systems are really reasonable. Not sure what one i shot but it had some really nice iron sights no need for scope. I think it was a Yugo? 0 -
.308 will get you out to a decent range. Real good all around caliber. 0 -
The best rifle caliber ever developed is the .30-06.
The best pistol caliber ?? .357 Smith and Wesson Magnum.

150 grain softpoint:
At the muzzle-
7.62x39: 2200fps
.30-30: 2390fps
At 100 yards-
7.62x39: 1977fps
.30-30: 2018fps
At 200 yards-
7.62x39: 1769fps
.30-30: 1605fps
Better at long ranges, but the .30-30 is better at 100 yards or less. Of course, as others have said, if you want a real long-range edge, you'd be better off with something like a bolt-action in .303, .308, .30-06 or 7.62x54R. But if you like the rapid-fire of a lever-action or semi-automatic, you could always get a Browning BLR in .300WSM, an AR-10 in .308 or AR-15 in something like 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel (probably not .223, though).0 -
